Happy Monday!!  We hope you all had amazing weekends.  We had an beautiful night on Friday night when we took our 82 year old grandma ice skating so she could check it off of her bucket list!  She had a little bit of assistance from our dad and Katie’s husband but it was so fun to watch her skate around the rink.

{image taken by Jen}

We followed that with a ride in a horse drawn carriage.  Yup our family is so much fun.  One fun fact was that Mickey and Minnie Mouse had rode in that same carriage (Matea was so excited about that) and Meryl Streep had also been in that carriage!  We felt like high rollers.  :)   Did you do anything fun?

On to our fun product of the day.  You all know how obsessed with are with our state and we know quite a few of you who are as equally obsessed with your state as we are (hello Texans!).  :)   We found these awesome state shaped pillows that we knew you all would like.  Here’s a small sampling of a couple pillows.

Arizona….

Delaware…

and of course, Minnesota…

{all images from love, california}

(Sorry Texans, she currently didn’t have a Texas one…)  We found these pillows from the etsy store love, california.   All of her pillows are $54 and totally customizable.  You get to pick the color of the state and where you want the heart.  These would be awesome pillows for a wedding gift to symbolize where they met, got married or lived their first year of marriage, as a house warming gift to a friend who is moving to a new state or for yourself, because you feel like buying yourself something nice.  The options are endless.  :)

Have a happy Monday everyone!

It feels really weird to not start out this post saying what I’m thankful for.  So I’m going to do it anyway, even though our Thankful November is technically over!  I’m thankful for everyone who participated in our little blog challenge!!  It was super fun for us and it was cool to see other bloggers that we love participate!  I hope you had a chance to check out some of the other bloggers who were participating in being thankful in November.  We’ll leave the blogroll up for a couple more days so you can take a peek!

Also, THANKS for helping me out with all the links yesterday.  I’m totally going to check them out and make an amazing meal plan.  At least, that’s the plan!

Ok, on to what Jen and I love today.  Pillows, of course.  As if you had to guess.  We came across this awesome pillow and wanted to show you guys:

Isn’t this super cute?  Its got a rustic burlap look to it but the print makes it feminine and pretty.  And for the record, it isn’t burlap, it is linen!  Additionally, the print is hand printed!  Just beautiful.  This pillow comes from the Etsy shop Giardino.  Two fun facts about Giardino: Pat, the shop owner lives in Ohio (GO MIDWEST!!!) and she sews everything on her grandmother’s 1940′s Singer!  Isn’t that sweet?  It must be so neat to sit down at that sewing machine knowing all the history that it has seen.  Wow.

Pat sells a number of items on her store, including tablecloths, tea towels, and cards, but of course we are suckers for pillows.  :-)   We also like this one:

You just can’t go wrong with gray and yellow these days, can you?  This pillow is stunning.  Thanks, Pat, for letting us post some of your pictures on our blog!

24 more days till Christmas!!!  We can’t wait!

i’m a sewing machine (…get it??)

Filed Under: accessories, diy, for the home by Jen — 8 Comments
November 10, 2011

This past weekend I pulled out the sewing machine that my mom gave me for Christmas years ago.  I had lost the foot during my last move (a year ago) and just bought a replacement for it.  Well, I had years of lost sewing to make up for so I went to town.  You remember our pillow fetish right?  Well, I decided to finally act on my love for pillows, follow this how-to and this how-to (yes, it took me two different sets of instructions before I fully understood what I was supposed to do), and make a few pillow slipcovers.

I started out with the leftover fabric I had from my garage sale lamp and made a matching pillow (I hate matchy-matchy stuff but I had to do it…).  It seriously was not that difficult (after I figured out the measurements) and within 30 minutes I had myself a pillow.  After I realized how stinking easy it was I was hooked.  Katie’s girls’ room has a window seat so I decided to make pillows for it.  I found some cute fabric drove to her house, picked up her couch’s pillows (that Katie hates) and made another slipcover.  I realized 2 of the 3 fabrics didn’t match the girls’ room (I probably should have bought the fabric after going to her house so I would have had the right colors but oh well…).  I had some leftover pink fabric from some project I started (and probably never finished) so I whipped up another pillow.  Here it is:

After easily completing two pillows I decided to be brave and try to recreate this pillow.  And this is how it turned out.

My final project is a bit janky but now I know what I did wrong so when I buy some fabric that actually works with the room I can make it even better.

I also discovered some amazing cute umbrella fabric in my fabric container and decided to make a burp rag.  When I finished that I decided I should make the girls some matching tshirts with an umbrella applique (I saw a onesie recently with the outline of MN on it and I want to try doing that eventually so this was my attempt…note to self, curved lines are WAY harder than straight ones).  If you don’t look too close they look decently cute.  :)

So y’all should start sending me ideas of things to sew.  I still have some leftover fabric from my dining room chairs and I’m dying to use it for something fabulous with it (but the color doesn’t go in my living room or bedroom….hmmm…).

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

To start off with, thanks for all of the encouraging comments about my 20 mile run!!  I had to get up early on Saturday morning to do it because Katie and I were going to a garage sale (which ended up being a bust…Katie will fill you in this afternoon…).  I don’t think there’s anything worse than setting your alarm in order to run on the weekend.  For real.  But I got up, I did it, I only tripped like 6 times because my legs got so tired the last 5 miles and I could barely lift them but I finished it 30 seconds per mile faster than I my training program calls for.  I was pretty happy.

{image from here}

This has sort of always been my motto…if I can just run a little faster than I can be home and in my nice warm shower quicker. No sense in prolonging the agony.

Ok, onto some fun pillows.  Katie and I love pillows.  Maybe someday we’ll actually purchase or make some.  Until that time comes, we’re stuck lusting over beautiful pictures all over the world wide web.  I never realized how much I love pillows until starting this blog.  I also never thought that Katie would like half of the pillows I like but in reality, I don’t think there has been one pillow that we have seen that the two of us didn’t like.  I guess pillows will be going on this year’s Christmas list.  On a Christmas note, I started listening to Christmas music this week.  Which got me so excited that I actually watched Elf.  In October.  Anyone with me on this??

Back to the pillows.  We have found a ton of pillows on etsy lately so I’m going to show you two different ones.  They both have words on them and they both are yellow.  I don’t really understand my obsession with yellow these days but let me tell you, I’m obsessed.  Katie and I were shopping this week and I kept gravitating toward yellow.  Weird.  I think I look really bad in yellow so I”ll stick with using the color on my bed.  Or couch.  Enough delay, here’s the first pillow.

{image used with permission from SweetNatureDesign}

This fantastic pillow is a pillow cover and only $22.  SweetNatureDesign has lots of really cool stuff…kitchen towels, pillow covers, scarves and bag all with” whimsical and unique designs”.  We love how this pillow sends a positive message in a fun way.  Sometimes you just need to be reminded to “be happy” when the dishes are dirty, the laundry needs to be done and the kids are crying (I don’t have kids but I can imagine that would get tough at times).  And it’s in yellow.  So freaking cute.  I saw another pillow from this store and I immediately of my friend Athena.  Her wedding photos were full of tandem bike shots and they even got canvas bags for all of the bridesmaids with a tandem bike on it.  This one’s for you Athena…

{image used with permission from SweetNatureDesign}

Our next pillow is from HoneyPieDesign. This is a fully stuffed pillow so you don’t need to worry about getting a pillow form.  It is $39.  Check it out.

I really love the cursive writing on this pillow.  I tried to write in cursive on my chalkboard because I see all of these fantastic things pinned on pinterest that have cursive on a chalkboard of some sort and it turned out pretty awful.  Maybe I’ll take a picture and show you all.

Despite the fact that I love these yellow pillows there is no where for me to put them!  My bedroom is greens, browns and pinks and my living room is being transformed into a red and maybe gray (I still don’t have a new couch…my new chairs are red though…).  Sad.  Someday I’ll have a place for these.  Or maybe our next pillow post will be with red pillows!!  :)

the modern day pillow

Wednesdays are good days for some fun facts behind the master minds behind PPS (as we like to call ourselves…you can just call us Jen and Katie).  You know a lot about our style and about our love for chocolate and coffee but here are some fun facts about other parts of our life…

-I like to run (I just signed up for my first full marathon!) while Katie enjoys doing Jillian Michaels workouts (which are insanely tough if you ask me).

-Katie is an overpacker while I turned into an underpacker after the World Race (except I always pack lots of shoes…).  I’m thankful that Katie and I are the same size so I can steal her clothes when I realize I forgot necessary items.

-We both hate driving and prefer others to drive so we can sleep.

-Katie loves to walk for exercise and frequently goes walking with her daughters.  I don’t.  I’m trying to like it more by taking weekly walks around a lake with my friend Laura which I actually really enjoy.  On our trip we walked 2 miles to the southernmost point of the U.S. and back and it was miserably hot.  I really did not enjoy that.  Katie didn’t either.  We kept stopping in stores to bask in the air conditioning for awhile.  Us Minnesotans can’t stand the extreme heat.

Ok, enough about us….let’s talk about today’s fantastic product…a pillow!  I know what you’re thinking, “but Jen, you’ve SHOWED us pillows” like the ones here, here and here.  Yeah, I know but can you really have too many amazing pillows to choose from?  Besides, you haven’t seen this pillow!

{image used with permission from the Cottage Cupboard}

Isn’t it beautiful?  And totally different than all of the other pillows we’ve shown you.  It is more of a modern print which I love and Katie loves the color combination.  We both love how the Cottage Cupboard has coordinating pillows that are all covers so you can easily change the feel a room with a quick zip of a zipper.  Kathy, the owner, has a huge variety of different styles of pillows and she even has a SALE going on right now (Katie and I are big sale rack shoppers).

We hope this pillow post didn’t disappoint you…we just you to have as many pillow choices as possible to make your redecorating decisions as difficult as possible when the time comes.  Just kidding!  On a serious note, we really want to know…what are some of your favorite PPS posts?  DIYs?  Jewelry?  Furniture?  Pillows???

And just for fun, here is a picture of us with the beautiful hostess on our ship.  Sadly, we can’t remember her name.  She remembered us every night and we enjoyed seeing her before dinner each day.  She made our vacation extra special!

if we love them, Lauren Conrad loves them too

I think Katie and I have a thing for pillows and mustard yellow…which is funny because I don’t think either one of us owns anything mustard yellow and honestly we don’t really have any cool pillows.  I think this is going to need to change.  The etsy store Bed Buggs has fantastic pillows.  Like this mustard yellow one.

This would look just fantastic on my floral couch that has my purple blanket draped over it.  Oh, bright purple, floral print and mustard yellow don’t go together?  Oh well, do I really care?  It’s a sweet pillow!  :)   You know what else makes this etsy store so cool?  Lauren Conrad even likes it!!  Yep, that’s right.  Good old LC likes Bed Buggs Boutique.  (Ok, in all reality, Katie and I don’t really keep up with all of the latest celebrity gossip but we think it is pretty spectacular that Bed Buggs Boutique was featured in People Magazine because Lauren Conrad said she liked their pillows…maybe she’ll like Paisley Print Shoes next?!)  This is the pillow that was featured.

{all images used with permission from Bed Buggs Boutique}

We like her store because you can buy the pillow ready to go or if you want a cheaper route and already have a pillow you want to cover, you can buy just a pillow cover.  Pretty slick huh?  And they’re reasonably priced…$26 for the mustard yellow one or $32 for the LC coveted one.

Who do you think will be the first celebrity to like Paisley Print Shoes?

birds of a feather pillow

Filed Under: accessories, for the home by Jen — 1 Comment

I love pillows.  I think they are great way to add some pop to an otherwise boring room or tie together different areas of a room (I have dark brown curtains in my bedroom and dark brown pillows on my bed).  Katie is currently trying to figure out what color pillows she should get for her couch in her living room since it needs some sort of color to it.  I’m trying to decide if I should make pillows from the leftover fabric from the chairs that we recovered  so I can bring the color into my living room (my place is so small you can see the entire living room while sitting in the dining room and vice versa…classy, I know).  I’ve also seen some sweet ideas of sewing cloth napkins together to make a pillow.  Novel idea.  But until I actually go about making my own pillows, here is a great place where you can buy pre-made pillows.

The store is called  Joom and we found her on etsy.  She has a plethora of different colors from yellow to orange to gray so you could probably find a pillow for any room in your house.

These 2 pillow are $28.  Not too shabby if you ask me!  My very talented artist friend Kendra (whom we’ll highlight on our blog very soon) paints birds sort of like these.  I am fortunate enough to own a “Kendra Original” that hangs is in my living room a these pillows could be a sweet addition to the bird accent I have going on.  :)   Joom also has square pillows for $16.  I think Katie should get one of these 2 for her living room.

Joom is full of other sweet items too like prints, cards and bags but we’ll highlight those a different day.  She also has her own website and you can find her on Facebook.  Go check her out and let us know if you get any of her pillows for your room…we may just feature you on an upcoming blog post!

did someone say accent pillow?

Recently Katie and I realized we have a similar interest…pillows.  Unique shaped pillows or pillows with embellishments, we tend to be drawn to all sorts of different kinds of pillows.  Both of our houses are full of lots of solid colored pillows with at least one accent pillow per room.  I wasn’t surprised when Katie pinned this pillow on her pintrest which is found from this etsy site.  It’s beautiful and perfect for the Madeline Chair below!

We both love the pattern and the colors.  Maybe someday we’ll be able to show you all how this pillow and the Madeline Chair look in our home.  Until then, it would like nice on the wingback chairs in my living room or on the window seat in Katie’s master bedroom.  Where would you put it?
