Jen’s Friday Free For All: Surfing!

Filed Under: for the soul by Jen — 4 Comments
January 20, 2012

Like we mentioned last week, I left Wednesday to go hang out with my cousin Andrew and his wife Joanna in San Diego.  They are 2 of the coolest people I know and I was so happy I got to hang out with them, see where they live and do “San Diegoan” type things.  Katie and I are blessed with fantastic family members and I wish we all lived closer to one another (but then you don’t get to take trips to CA in the winter to see them…).

I alluded to this on Tuesday, but Andrew taught me how to surf when I went out to California.  It was actually not as difficult as I thought it would be and minus the water temperature being freezing cold it was so much fun.  Andrew gave me a Surfing 101 class on the sand…

…and then took me out in the water and helped me surf.  He was an amazing teacher and super encouraging which made it that much more fun.  I was surprised at how calm I was in the water when I’m usually a Nervous Nancy.  Maybe it was knowing that Andrew was going to help me out or maybe it was the fact that if I just stood up the water level wasn’t higher than my neck.  :)   Either way, I was pretty calm!

I love this picture of me catching my first wave mainly because of how excited Andrew is that I actually some-what rode the wave in.  :)

 And here I am in the middle of standing up!  I think this picture looks sweet (even though I’m riding a teeny tiny little baby wave…).

{all pictures taken by Joanna…check out their blog for even more}

 I love trying new things so this was a blast.  By the end of day I was able to catch waves all by myself…it was really exciting.   Be proud of me.  :)

After surfing, the three of us chowed down on a huge, amazing burger and then cruised around town checking out antique stores and thrift stores.  I love hanging out with people who actually like to shop at second hand stores and not think their gross.  While we were at Goodwill, Jo and I found a sweet CA lifeguard sweatshirt for $2.49 and Andrew found me a Pacific Beach (the beach where we surfed) tshirt for $0.89.  I think from now on I’m going to check out Goodwills on vacation.  You can find just as cool shirts there as a “normal” store and pay 1/16 of the price.  I did this while in Denver as well and found a sweet Denver tshirt at a Goodwill and paid only a couple bucks for it.  Amazing.

I have a picture on my fridge that says, “When was the last time you did something for the first time?”  It’s a good reminder for me to get out there and try something new…even if that means failing miserably.

Have you tried anything new lately?

Friday Favorites: Jen’s Wall

Filed Under: art, for the home by Jen — 11 Comments
October 14, 2011

As you could guess, Katie and I have similarly different ways of decorating the walls in our house.  Yes there are prints and pieces of art that we both love but the way it is displayed in our homes is vastly different.  When I moved into my apartment last October (yikes, it’s been a year!) my mom gave me the map she had used to track me all over the world the year before.  She had put pins in all of the places I went so she could follow my path.  I knew I wanted it up somewhere prominent so up in the main hallway it went.  It is actually the first thing you see when you walk in to my place and what connects the bedroom/bathroom to the living room/dining room/kitchen (it’s a small apartment if you can’t figure that out).  I decided that would be my “travel wall” so up went photo after photo from my trip.  I made a few collages of money, bus tickets, and random things I picked up and added those to the wall.  I’ve probably rearranged it 30 times and I keep adding stuff to it.  Here it is:

{image taken by Jen which is why it is not a good picture}

Ok, I don’t think that this picture does it justice.  I think it looks really dorky in this picture.  Maybe that means it is actually dorky in person but whatever…

Did you notice a little bit of Printable Scriptures up there??  (Don’t forget to sign up for our giveaway and it could be yours too!!)  Yes it is random.  Yes it is eclectic.  Yes it is perfect (for me!).  I think of it as my “Happy Wall”.  Whenever I need to smile or remember a good memory I just walk next to my wall and stare for a while.  It’s good for my soul.  Katie loves my wall and tried to do a replica of my wall in her house…let’s just say when you see Katie’s this afternoon you will laugh.  You’ll really notice our differences.  :)

Switching gears a little bit, we need your help.  Remember our October goals?  Well we’re sort of slacking on them.  We have yet to try a new recipe, are about 15 people short of 80 views per day, are stuck at 87 fans on facebook and we had only one person message us this month with an item they think we’d like (which we actually LOVE..thanks Erica!).  We feel like we’re in weight loss mode and we’ve hit a plateau.  Would you help us get past this bump in our road?  Please?  We would love it if you sent us a recipe, an item you’d think we’d like or told a friend about our blog.  Every little bit helps.  We know we could just try a recipe that we find on our own (and we’re actually going to try Faith’s Frosted Pumpkin Brownies below) but it’s so much nicer when someone gives you a tried and true recipe.  We’re dorks, we know.  But sometimes you just have to ask to receive!

On to my favorite links for the week:

-Katie and I love everything pumpkin so I think we’re going to need to try these frosted punpkin blondies
-Even when life is hard…Love this quote!
-Another DIY lamp project!  This one is ruffled!

Jen’s Friday Favorites: Watches

Filed Under: accessories, for the girl by Jen — 6 Comments
October 7, 2011

Katie and I are really not big fans of watches.  That is one fashion trend that we agree on (and by agree I mean we both have a strong dislike for watches most of the time).  Neither one of us ever wear a watch (which annoyed the heck out of our mom when our entire cruise we’re asking her “Mom, what time is it?” since our cell phones didn’t work).  On our trip we spent most of the last day shopping since our poor Minnesota skin was screaming from too much sun.  On a side note, my right arm is peeling like crazy which never happens to me and we have our brother’s wedding in 2 weekends and we’re wearing strapless dresses.  Does anyone know a fix for this??  I’m using lotion like crazy but nothing helps!! Ok, back to shopping…we went in and out tons of stores especially in the beginning.  One of our very first stops I saw a watch.  A white watch.  A Slap Watch.  “A Slap Watch??” you may ask.  Yes, a Slap Watch.  Remember those old school slap bracelets from the early 90′s?  Well think that, but with a watch in the middle.  A-ma-zing.  And the best part of all is it is glowing white (which is going to look fantastic on my snow-white skin after this tan fades…or peels…).  Here it is.

{mediocre photos taken by katie before the big chop}

One funny thing is that Katie’s 3 year old is afraid of slap bracelets.  When we got home she was all intrigued with my watch until I showed her it was a Slap Watch.  Immediately her arm went behind her back and she took one giant step back.  It’s funny what kids are afraid of isn’t it?

Here are some blogs I loved this week:

-She’s our fave…and she’s back!

-Some really cute postcards I would love to get in the mail

-Can’t get enough of this foundation

My weekend is full of wedding activities…a bachelorette party for our soon-to-be sister-in-law and a bridal shower for a friend from high school.  Add an all morning event at church on Saturday and it’s going to be a busy weekend!  Do you have anything fun planned?

On a final side note, Katie always takes our original pictures for our posts and a lot of time ends up putting them in my blog posts for me (isn’t she a good sister??).  I just realized what she wrote underneath today…”mediocre pictures…”.  Ummm news flash Katie, those are NOT mediocre.  Everyone yell at Katie for being so hard on herself.  I think they’re fantastic.  Can I get a “what, what”!?*

(*”what, what” is how Katie and I express our agreement…try it, it’s fun)

Jen’s Friday Favorites: Nail Polish

Filed Under: accessories, for the girl by Jen — 6 Comments
September 30, 2011

Nail polish.  You may not think much about nail polish or you may think a lot about nail polish.  It is one of those things that is so funny because everyone is so different about nail polish.  For instance, while I was on the World Race, my friend Holland and I decided to pick up ugly cheap nail polish in random countries and keep our nails painted the whole year.  I think we made it most of the year although I will admit there were times I felt sorry for my poor little nails because they just needed some fresh air.  Sometime I feel like nail polish is like a winter coat for nails…you put it on when they’re feeling cold but sometimes it’s nice out and they just want to feel the wind in their hair…or cuticles…or something.  Then there is my friend Hope.  Hope, if I remember correctly, wears nail polish every single day.  Wow.  That’s hardcore.

When Katie brought Matea home I decided that I was going to be the cool aunt who paints her nieces nails whenever the heck they want me to.  So the night Katie brought Matea home at 7 months old, I knew she was dying for me to paint her nails so I happily obliged.  (Ok, in reality I don’t remember the first time I painted her nails but I’m pretty sure she wasn’t old enough to ask for it…)  Since Matea has been able to talk she is constantly asking me to paint her nails for her.  Like this morning.  While I was working for Aaron (yes, I am a part time employee for Macdaddy Music), she came down to the distribution center (otherwise known as the garage) with nail polish in hand ready for me to paint her nails (which I happily did…but don’t tell Aaron since I was on company time).

A couple weeks ago I was at Katie’s house (shocking, I know) and wanted to paint my nails.  I went to her nail polish drawer only to find 10 bottles of nail polish.  Now that’s not the interesting part.  The interesting part is that she has only 2 different shades of polish…7 red and 3 purple.  Oh and one clear.  WHAT?!  Seriously?  When I got home I checked out my nail polish and was relieved to find basically every color of polish under the sun (ok maybe not that many but lots more than 2).  We decided we needed to blog about it.  Here is what my collection looks like…

{images taken by Katie Peterson}

Isn’t it great?  I was so lucky to get 3 bottles of nail polish from 2 lovely friends for my birthday.  Matea is especially fond of the bright teal one (lucky for her I share my nail polish otherwise she’d be stuck with either red or purple on her nails every day).  So what kind of nail polish person are you?  The every day wearer?  The every once in a while?  The only when a professional does it?

Jen’s Friday Favorites: Fall Wreath

Filed Under: accessories, for the home by Jen — 4 Comments
September 9, 2011

Oh fall.  What a glorious time of year.  Pumpkin lattes.  Apple cider.  Bonfires.  Scarves.  Layering clothes.  Sleeping with the window open with a big blanket on top of me.  L.O.V.E.

Like Katie said, we’re picking our favorite fall wreaths.  I’ve never had a fall wreath before.  I’ve had a few Christmas wreaths in my day but never a fall one.  I’ve actually never really decorated for fall before.  I guess maybe I’m just not adult enough yet?  Who knows.  Anyway.  My wreath pick is fantastic.  Obviously I think so, I picked it.  And I didn’t need Katie’s approval.  :)   Here it is.

{imaged taken from Little Things Bring Smiles}

Isn’t it lovely?  The flowers are made from felt.  Katie from Little Things Bring Smiles made it and she’s so nice that she has directions for you so you can recreate on her blog.  I’m thinking that I should try it.  After all, I did learn how to make fabric flowers for my friend Athena’s wedding and it wasn’t that difficult.  And these look even easier than that!  My problem is, I will get this grand idea to craft a really complex item (hello, king sized quilt I started 10 years ago that I wanted to sew by hand and have yet to finish) and never finish it.  Maybe I should make this wreath with 1/4 of the roses.  Or have all of my friends over to help me make felt flowers.  Wreath making party anyone?  :)

All right, next thing…here are the links that I wanted to share with you.

Our blog bff reminds us of a Truth (and gives everyone a free print!).

I want to make these yummy fall pancakes.

I have loved this flower since March.

We hope you all have beautiful weekends full of fall weather, good coffee and lots of sleep (especially for all you teachers out there who are done with their first week of school).  Make sure you check back next week for another giveaway!!  (or you can just like us on facebook so you’ll know exactly when we announce it…)  See you Monday!

Jen’s Friday Favorite: mnaDesigns

Filed Under: accessories, for the girl by Jen — 1 Comment

Fridays will be a little fun.  You will get to learn a bit more about Katie and me as we highlight our favorite items from a particular store, our unique way of wearing the same thing, or our particular flavor of a staple item such as the little black dress.  We’re sure you’ll be able to relate more to one of us and we’d love to hear who you’re more alike.  And without further ado….our first Friday Favorite.

This week we stumbled upon an etsy shop, mnaDesigns.  I first saw this amazing Mocha Pearl Cluster Necklace while I was on pintrest (where else?).  I’m a big fan of fun necklaces and this one is definitely fun.  And at $30, it’s within my price range!  I recently scored a fabulous teal BCBG dress with silver embellishments on it at a local thrift store that would look even better with this necklace.

So, would you wear this necklace?  Or would you choose Katie’s pick?
