bedside stand makeover

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 8 Comments
April 29, 2013

It’s Monday. And guess what – I GET to work! My pastor’s been doing a series on faith in the workplace and it has been really good for me. I sort of suck at bringing faith to the workplace so hopefully I can take some of the lessons he taught and actually put them to good use.

Katie and I had busy weekends! Katie was gone all weekend at a women’s retreat with her church. I babysat her kids Friday night and spent the night (her husband wasn’t going to be home till 11ish and there is no way I was going to last to 11). I also gave Matea (Katie’s oldest) date cards for her birthday – one of those was a sleepover at her house – so she used that up. This of course meant a wake up call about 7am. On a Saturday. Awesome.

Adlee always wears my shoes around so of course she put them on right when she got up to. Love it! Sunday I spray painted a bunch of stuff. Because dude, it was nice enough to spray paint – WOOHOO!!

I’m in re-do my room mode and I’m basing it on these two pins.

I’m loving the gold and hot pink.

My room had a muted pink which I like initially but then I decided I needed some color. And hey – I’m still single so I might as well have a hot pink bedroom while I can! :)

One of the things I painted today was my bedside stand.  It looked like this.

photo(93)

I think I bought it at a garage sale last year. Maybe. Don’t quote me on that. It’s served it boring brown purpose well. Until now.

After a few coats of some fabulously bright pink spray paint, this is what it looks like now.

photo(94)

Thoughts? Do you like? I had bought a gold spray paint for my dresser but when I used it I realized it was more of a glitter paint, not a gold color. I still did my dresser that color (pics to come later) but also did the bottom of the night stand legs too. You can kind of see that. They look more gold in person. And of course I didn’t tape off the top part or anything (since it was still sticky from doing it 5 minutes earlier) so it isn’t the best look. Maybe one of these days I’ll make it look all pristine. Doubtful but you never know.

photo(92)

I’ll get some photos of how my room is coming along soon. I’m really really happy with the progress!

So did anyone else get outside and do some spray painting or garage saling this weekend?

a 97 cent bedside table

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 12 Comments
August 28, 2012

Last week I made a spur of the moment stop at my Goodwill.  You know, just to see what they had.  I walked over to the furniture section where I came upon this beauty:

The price tag said ONE DOLLAR.  ONE DOLLAR!  I figured for a buck I could find something to do with it.  Even if I just threw it away or brought it back to the Goodwill.  I brought it up to the register and the gal said, “You know, since you are carrying it out yourself you get 10% off.  So with tax your total comes to 97 cents.”  For real. I dug up my 10 dimes, let her keep the 3 pennies in change, and brought the thing home.

The top wasn’t looking so great….

but I sanded it down, put a coat or two of primer on and a bunch of coats of gray spray paint and ended up with this:

Not bad, eh?  Oh, I also painted the legs white.  As a side note, spray painting is NOT FUN when you are an impatient person.  I actually kind of prefer paintbrush painting because you get more instant gratification rather than waiting for these thin coats to dry that don’t seem like they are doing anything.

So.  Anyway.  The downstairs guestroom, which is now being occupied by Jodi for a few months (as Jen mentioned yesterday), needed a bedside table so there it went.  We previously had a tv tray there which worked, but, you know, is kind of ghetto.

I guess to be fair this table didn’t really cost 97 cents….I did have to buy the spray primer and spray paint, but I have plenty left over for more projects.  And I already had the white spray paint from a previous project.  And speaking of the guestroom, I should do a mini-update on it – it looks WAAAAAY different from the last time I posted about it!  (I posted a couple pictures of my inspiration for the bedroom colors and the walls  turned out EXACTLY like I wanted!)

And that, my friends, is about as crafty as I can get these days!

Any Goodwill or thrift furniture finds?  We are always jealous of you all who find cool stuff on the side of the road….

bathroom update! big changes!

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Katie — 11 Comments
June 26, 2012

I am finally getting around to posting another bathroom update!  This one will show MAJOR changes, so I’ll just get right too it. I didn’t edit these photos at all, I just threw them onto this post.  I’m such a good blogger.  (Here are the before and during posts) Here is a photo from the doorway “before…”

and “after…”

Another shot of the vanity.  Ikea plumbing kits are VERY hard to install to normal plumbing.  Aaron made quite a few trips to the hardware store over a few days to get it right.  In the end, the extra sink and vanity storage that we got form an Ikea unit made it worth it, but it was not without some MAJOR headaches and frustration.  (Standard double sinks would have been too long and would have butted right up to the toilet in the bathroom.  The Ikea sinks gave us a double sink that also left us room for the extra storage unit.)

Oh look!  We have a shower.

And here is a picture to show the new lighting.

Isn’t it NIGHT and DAY?!  I LOVE IT!!  We still have all the finishing touches to do.  The list includes:
1. Hang mirror
2. Install trim
3. Hooks for towels
4. ARTWORK (I’m thinking a few bright frames with some simple art)
5. Different window treatment (no clue there)
6. Different rugs (I’m thinking something bright??)

So that is the latest!  I am excited to work on the finishing touches.  I have been on the lookout for frames at garage sales but have struck out so far.  I might have to pay upscale Goodwill prices for some frames to spray paint.  :-)   Stay tuned for an “official” before/after post when things are a bit more complete!

bathroom remodel part 2

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Katie — 9 Comments
June 5, 2012

Lets continue with part 2 of our bathroom remodel saga, shall we?

Ok.

Where we left off, we were in the process of removing the tile from the shower.  That took FOREVER.  Like 3 hours.  My shoulders were killing me – but it was such a sense of accomplishment when it was done!  Then, Aaron took the sink and vanity out of the little vanity nook. And then the fun part came – ripping out that dumb wall!  The wall had nothing in it, no electrical or plumbing or anything.  Aaron told Matea to grab some gloves and a hammer and he let her pound a hole in the wall.  (she is in her pajamas.)  Funny thing about her gloves – we have these white dress up gloves that I think most girls would use to play princess, but Matea thinks they are “work gloves.”  She always uses them to “play farm” and “feed the pigs.”  Anyhow.

Out comes the wall!

We found out, after the wall came out, that the wall behind the vanity is 3/4″ deeper than the wall behind the toilet.  So, Aaron had to tear out the existing drywall, get spacers, and install new drywall.  Very annoying for him.  Anyhow, the picture below is with the wall out a portion of the floor gone.  HEY-OH!

For the last almost two weeks we’ve been trying to keep Adlee out of things like drywall screws.

Over Memorial Day our friends Dave and Fae came – Dave helped Aaron out for two days and it was AWESOME.  They were able to get so much done!  In the photo below they had installed new drywall, mudded every part that needed to get mudded (is that a word?), put in new subfloor, and were all ready to paint.  We had a gallon of white paint and 3/4 a gallon of gray so we just used a paint stick to tint the white.  It was very scientific.  :-)   If you walked into the room you’d think it was white.

So I’ll end at this point.  Imagine….walls done…now we need to install stuff!!  Yeah!!!  Only it takes WAY LONGER than you think it should, even when you think it is going to take WAY LONG!  Ugh.  So we just listened to harmonica music to make it not as painful.

Stay tuned….we’re making progress.  Who would have thought it would be so hard to find the right size mirror?!?!

DIY first birthday t-shirt

Filed Under: diy, for the girl by Katie — 4 Comments
March 6, 2012

Several months ago Jen made these shirts for Matea and Adlee and I thought they were super cool.  I’ve been wondering if it would be possible for ME to make a shirt.  Jen and I have both thought it would be fun to make some personalized onesies or t-shirts for friends when they have babies.  And heck, if we got good enough at it, maybe we’d make a shirt even WE could wear.

So anyway, I’m not really going to give you the whole play by play for the whole thing, but I will give you some of it because hey, posts are better with pictures, right?

I decided to make a “one” shirt for Adlee for her birthday.  First thing first, I had to go buy a long sleeve t-shirt.  Apparently stores in MN FORGET that we still have winter for several more months, so finding a long sleeve t-shirt proved to be much more difficult than it should have.  Everyone has spring apparel out.  Lame.  I ended up finding one at Target with a pocket on it.  You take what you can get, I guess.

Then I printed off a couple “ones” and decided to use the bigger one on the right.

So.  Then I just followed the instructions on the interfacing to attach it to the fabric, traced the “one” backwards and cut it out.

Then I continued to follow the instructions and ironed the one onto the shirt!  And it didn’t work!  WHAT?!  Turns out you actually have to peel the backing OFF the fabric to get it to stick to whatever you are ironing it too.  Oops.  :-)

I then went over to our mom’s house to use her sewing machine and her sewing expertise to sew a little border around it.  The curve at the top of the one was DIFFICULT, but for my first try I think it turned out ok!

Adlee is at the. worst. age for taking pictures.  She wiggles and moves way too much and doesn’t understand, “sit still and smile.”  Annoying.  :-)   So here are some pictures of the shirt with her wearing it.

See what I mean?  Getting pictures are brutal. I suppose I could have taken a picture of the shirt before I had Adlee wear it and get it dirty, but that would have taken more planning ahead than I have the mental capacity for these days.  Anyhow, I’ve got a bunch of fabric leftover and a package of onesies to try making some creations with Jen, so, we’ll see!  I currently know at least 5 pregnant people, so we’ll see if we can pull off anythign cute enough to give as a gift!

a knit dishrag

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Jen — 25 Comments
February 13, 2012

Happy Monday!  Remember on Friday how I wrote about making dishrags?  Well I made one.  (I guess people were confused because I wrote washcloths, not dishrags….I meant dishrags….work with me people. :) ).

Katie and I got all of this 100% cotton yarn from our grandma.

I wanted to make dishrags eventually but I didn’t know what sort of yarn to use.  I probably could have googled it but instead I asked at our grandma’s knitting club.  This is where all of the yarn came from.  Our grandma’s friend had a ton so she gave it to our grandma to give to us.  See? There are nice people in the world.  :)

Here’s the kind of yarn we used.

I found a pattern online (after googling dishrags…not washcloths…).  It is actually the first time I’ve ever used a pattern while knitting.  I usually just make things up as I go.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I decided to attempt a pattern a. because it looked cool and b. I decided I needed to learn some new things when it comes to knitting.

I found a pattern for “Grandmother’s Favorite Dishcloth” from this website.  I don’t really know the title of the website…but there are tons of knitting patterns on there.

It actually wasn’t a hard pattern…and I did learn something new.  YO means yarn over and it means to pull the yarn from the back of the needle in between both needles to the front.  It creates a cool border.

The picture isn’t the greatest but you get the idea (I hope).

And here is the final product.  Again, not the best picture (thank you, phone) and it’s a little lopsided but for the first time using a pattern I’m ok with it.  Besides, it for washing dishes, not wearing so who is really going to notice?

{all photos taken by Jen}

I’m still hoping to try some new patterns and make a bunch more dishrags.  Maybe if I get good I’ll start sending them to all of our bloggy friends for their birthdays.  I mean for real, who wouldn’t want a new dishrag for their birthday?  ;)

So, did anyone do anything crafty this weekend?

the dresser before

Filed Under: diy, for the home, furniture by Jen — 9 Comments
February 9, 2012

You all can recall when we talked about the sweet rug I scored from Ikea…right?  (You better, that was only 3 days ago…)  Well, during our adventure in dreamland, I found the most perfect dresser EVER.  Actually 2 perfect dressers.  One with wiggly handles (the gray one) and one with a spot for my bras, underwear and socks (TMI? I just like my delicates to be organized :) ).

Can you hear the angels singing and see the sunlight streaming in on them??  I can.  They’re a beauty.  And $200.  The one on the right (the Birkeland) is on sale for $200…it’s originally $300. (The one on the left is the Edland.)  Yes, I know $200 isn’t really all that much to spend on a dresser but when you like to spend more money on the clothes you wear and not so much on the dresser in which you’re clothes sleep, than $200 is a lot.

This is what is currently in my house.

{images used via ikea.com}

I bought it immediately after graduating college and liked it until I started babysitting for a family who had it in their BABY’S room and saw it popping up everywhere in nurseries.  Umm…hi, I’m 27….I finally have a big girl job and a big girl apartment, it’s time for a big girl dresser.

I still didn’t like that $200 price tag though so that got me thinking.  What if I found an old dresser and painted it and made it look all fantastic and used that instead?!  Craigslist has about 100 dressers posted each day I’m sure I can find one in a week or so right?

I also scoured the internet for some fun looking dressers for inspiration.  Here are a few I found…

You all know my love for turquoise so this is an obvious fav…

{image via design style guide}

A sweet vintage looking one to go with my old-school looking trunk…

{via design sponge}

A fun vibrant one to go with my new bedroom (I bought a gray comforter and getting tons of fun pillows and things to accent)….this would work perfect!

{via design sponge}

And here is one that I could actually probably do with my current dresser.  What do you think???

{image from domestic ease}

The amazing Kristin over at Domestic Ease gives full instructions on how to do the map dresser.  If you’ve never been over to her blog you should probably do so.  It’s all about taking what you have and improving it rather than outright buying new stuff.  Our kind of girl!

All right, people, what are your thoughts?  Try to revamp the dresser I already own?  I’m not sure how great that will be since it’s basically plastic…but spray paint adheres to everything, right?  Or should I just search craigslist for a new dresser, sell the old on craigslist and do a little dresser makeover?

the trunk progress

Filed Under: diy, for the home, furniture by Jen — 26 Comments
February 1, 2012

Who’s dying to see how my trunk is turning out?  We know Erin is.  :)   We’re dying to show you guys so here we go.

Here is what the trunk looked like when I got it.

Here’s were our thoughts going into it:

1. Keep the color, but clean it up a ton.

2. Get 2 belts for the top to connect to the buckles on the bottom.

3. Cover the inside with fabric.

We thought it’d be nice to keep the same color and just clean it up a bit so we got some cleaners and went to town.  We scrubbed with rags and brushes and a bunch of different kinds of cleaners.  And…nothing really happened.  It was still sort of a mess. We knew it was clean but it didn’t look much better.

So then we got out some sand paper and tried sanding it. We thought we could give it a more rustic look but nothing really happened with that either.

Hmmm….that sort of kicked plan number 1 to the curb so we decided we’d spray paint it and get it all one color and nice and cleaned up.

While we were scrubbing with the brushes we discovered that they had just painted over leather straps on the bottom.  We began scrubbing the heck out of them to try to get all the paint off.

About halfway through we decided we would just cut them off and buy 2 sets of belts and make a new strap.  So that’s what we did.

We cut off the straps on the top and the bottom before realizing that they were tacked in underneath metal covers.  We had 2 options here.

1. Keep the metal covers on and cut up the belts and make them look like the were one long one.  Or

2. Take off the metal cover and put the belts on whole.

Well, we had bought new tacks to tack on the belts and we were going to paint it anyway so we decided to just pull of the metal covers and get the old belts completely off and put the new ones on correctly.  In the process of pulling these covers off we realized they weren’t metal….they were simply painted leather!  Sweet!  It took a few hammers, screw drivers and a crowbar but we finally got all of the tacks and leather off of the trunk.  It was quite the workout.

After they were all off we sprayed 2 coats of spray paint all over the trunk.

Then we ate some cheesecake.  And drank coffee.

Then after letting it dry for oh, 20 minutes we decided we would finish the outside.  Katie and I are activators and like to get things done even if it means staying up until 3 in the morning.  Lucky for us it was only about 11:00pm at this point so we went at it.  We had ended up buying 8 belts so we went through option after option until we came up with one that we liked.

The plan was to use 2 belts for the top and then 2 belts for the bottom.  We couldn’t use one belt for the left and one belt for the right because they weren’t long enough so we had to mix and match.

So we cut up 4 belts and tacked them onto the trunk.

When they were on we decided it needed something extra so Katie quickly spray painted one of the belts, we cut it up and tacked those on over the belts in the same spot that the other leather pieces were.  (Again, any normal person would have spray painted the belt, wait 24 hours for it to set and then proceed with cutting and tacking on.  We are not normal.)

Perfection.  We LOVE it.  It was quite a bit of work but the outside look so sweet.

The inside is still up in the air.  Initially I planned on doing fabric.  That changed when I had an old Bible that was going to end up in the trash (it was too beat up to donate and I have 3 Bibles so I didn’t need it…it sounds awful though that I was going to throw it anyway…).  Katie had the great idea to cut up the pages and modge podge them into the inside.

So we started cutting and modge podging.  (We being Katie while Marnie and I worked on the outside.)

We finished the inside shelf thing that pulls out.  We had to wait on the actual inside since the paint still hadn’t dried (and it was midnight).

When we put it in the trunk to see how it looked I had second thoughts.

It reminded me of old newspaper that was just stuck in there…not a fabulous Bible full of verses.  It didn’t give it that “finished feel”.

This is where I need your help.  Should we continue on with the Bible verses?  Switch to fabric?  Katie thought maybe staining the pages before modge podging them would make it look cool.  I just don’t know.  Help!!  Either way we know that it is easy to redo it (or easy enough…) so it really isn’t a make it or break it type of situation but I’d still love your insight.  I know we have lots of creative people out there who read PPS!

We aren’t going to show you the whole thing because right now it is just sitting in Katie’s garage so pictures won’t do it justice.  When it we are finished with the inside and have it moved into my new place we’ll show you the rest.

So what do you think??  Is the process looking good?  Any ideas you have for us??

playroom organization part 2

Filed Under: art, diy, for the home, furniture by Katie — 16 Comments
January 25, 2012

Now on to the finished product of the playroom!  I think I’ll just cut to the chase and show you the finished product.  Get ready for picture overload.  First though, the video so you can see what the room looks like since its kinda small (and FYI I didn’t even watch this, I just recorded and posted.  yep, that’s how I roll). And if you don’t want to watch it you really aren’t missing out on much .

Ok and now for pictures.
I am seriously in love with how it turned out!!  LOVE.  Ok…so…if you are interested, here are some details.  Most things are from Ikea.

I got this piece of art from Hallmark a few years ago.  I have seen this saying floating around on Pinterest a lot; I love it for the play room:

The guitar is hung on a nail behind the kid-sized Ikea chair:

Aaron hung up this curtain wire to hang kid creations on.

We got two of these Trofast storage frames and filled them with stuff:

The top shelves are filled with independent play things on the left and puzzles on the right.  The nice thing is that Adlee cannot reach these items but they are easily accessible to Matea.  The bins are filled with the following items:  On the left – activity books (sticker books/highlights magazines/workbooks), barbies, magnet dolls, velcro food, and puzzles.  On the right – the top drawer has a couple random items in it, then balls, dress up clothes, and dress up accessories.  Again, this system works great because Matea can reach her Barbies but Adlee can’t.  Also, Adlee can reach puzzle pieces to play with chew on.  I attached labels on using name tags and velcro!  Easy to change out as our toy needs change.

I then just cut off the very top strip and stuck some paper in!  I used images off of google and also put words on the labels so Matea can start recognizing names of things to go along with pictures.

These storage systems are in a little “nook” in the room and they don’t fully fit the space, so I have some of the bulky musical instrumets in the little area between the wall and the storage unit.  So far it is working great!  We are keeping a little keyboard, another toy guitar, a recorder, a microphone, and some moroccas there.

We hung the curtains over the window with the same Ikea wire system we used for the art display.  I found the curtains on sale at target for $6.50ish each.  The table under the window is this one from Ikea (shocking, I know!) and it folds out.  This was a bit of a splurge for us but we figure it will be useful for years to come in lots of situations.  Another plus to this table is the storage drawers inside where we keep the tag reader pen and various markers/crayons/colored pencils.  Again, totally accessible to Matea but Adlee hasn’t figured it out (yet).I should also mention that the rug was also found at Ikea.  For $40 I’m not concerned about it getting ruined someday and it added the “play” feel to the room that I was hoping for.

Now for the Expedit system.  We did not push the bookcase all the way to the wall and I used the space between the wall and the shelving unit to store the crawl tunnel, puppet stage, and a couple other bulky items.  It is working great. The top row has: Paper/Tag reader stuff/books/books
Second row has: Play-doh/ball toy & farm/board books/board books

I used the same name tag holders for labels on the baskets as I did in the other shelves.  I attached the labels to the baskets with rings – it works slick!  The baskets are labelled as follows:
Third row: Baby toys/Puppets/Dolls/Other toys
Fourth row: Blocks/Cars/Kitchen/Stuffed Animals

On the very top of the shelf I have some art supplies and Matea’s “Happy Birthday” hat she got at church.  :-)

And last, but not least, to the right of the big shelving unit is the play kitchen.  I put a 3M hook on the bookshelf and hung the aprons up!

And there you have it! The only things you don’t see is a tea set and two 71 quart rubbermaid bins.  One holds large legos and the other holds  baby toys that I rotate into the basket in the Expedit shelf.  Those three items are in the closet right by the stairs.

I’m really happy with how this all turned out!!  There is plenty of space to play and space to grow/change/adjust as the kids get bigger and their interests change.  I can easily consolidate some of these toys down into just one container if I need to down the road!

Thanks for letting me share this with you all – I feel really proud of myself and it ended up being a really fun project for me.  :-)
