my metropolis jacket

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 10 Comments
January 24, 2012

Remember when I blogged about my dream winter coat here?  Well ever since winter arrived I have been hitting up REI every week searching in desperation for another long, down jacket to get to an affordable price.  (When all of them are between $250-$350 it doesn’t feel like they will ever be in price range….)  REI has a unique thing where if you are a member you can shop in their “Scratch and Dent” section and get deals on returned items.  REI has a 100% satisfaction policy so if you are a member you can return stuff there basically whenever you want.  I love it.

I am lucky enough to have an REI about 10 minutes from my work so I hop over there frequently to see if I can pick up any sweet deals.  It’s sort of funny to see some of the stuff in the Scratch and Dent and the reason why people returned it (they always have the reason why the return it so people know what was wrong with the item since the Scratch and Dent stuff aren’t returnable).  There are normal things such as “it got a hole”, “the zipper broke” or “it shrunk” but there are also funny ones such as “my wife didn’t like the color”.  No joke.  So because some dude’s wife didn’t like the color of said jacket, somebody else is getting it for more than 50% off.  Kinda weird but whatever.

After a few weeks of searching with no luck I stopped in one day to find my almost dream coat.  This time it was a North Face.  The North Face Metropolis to be exact.  Ironic that I like the Patagonia Downtown and the North Face Metropolis?  I think not.  The only real difference was the lack of fur on the hood (which I was totally ok with). It was regularly $289 and it was on sale for $125.  Whoa.

I tried it on about 20 times, sent my mom, Katie and Laura pictures of me wearing it and tried it on another 4 times.  I have a rough time spending money…even if it’s something I need.  Everyone gave me their stamp of approval and I tried it on one last time to make sure I wanted it.  As I was taking it off a girl my age walked into the section where I was wearing the exact jacket I was debating over.  Of course I jumped on that opportunity and asked her opinion of the jacket.  She said she was in love with it and it was one of the best purchases she ever bought.

That sold me completely so off I went to pay for my new winter jacket.  And here it is.

I realize we should have taken these photos outside but it was sleeting outside and nobody likes to stand outside in the sleet.  Not even me in a super fabulous jacket.  :)

And here’s my model photo…I know, I should be getting paid for this but instead I put these photos on the internet for free out of the kindness of my heart.

So what do you think?  Would you give it your stamp of approval?  (Even if you don’t, don’t tell me, or I might have buyer’s remorse…just kidding!)  :)

bleach art shirt – take 2

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 12 Comments
January 11, 2012

You may remember this post that we wrote a few months ago when we attempted to make bleach pen art t-shirts.  It was a total success for Jen and a failure of epic proportions for me.  Here is a photo showing the success and obvious failure:

You can even tell by the look on my face that I was NOT happy about the way my shirt turned out. (On the plus side, I do use it as pajama shirt since the fabric is SO soft. It is comfy. I will NEVER.EVER. wear this in public).

Anyhow.  A couple weeks ago I was cleaning out some drawers and I came across a t-shirt I never wear.  I went to put it in my “give away” pile when I had an epiphany: this shirt just might work for a bleach pen art re-do.  The color was much better, and I know now to NOT put a big horizontal rectangle across the top third of a t-shirt. *ahem*  Naturally, I scoured pinterest for some inspiration….I found this shirt from Show, Tell, Share which was actually our original inspiration for the project:

and this image from The Next Bird:

So, I whipped out some aluminum foil to put in the middle of the shirt which worked MARVELOUSLY, and I started “drawing.”  I had these two images up on my computer so I could get an idea of the feel I was going for.  I just kept adding more and more things until I thought I had something I’d like….and…I ended up LOVING it!!  Here is what I did:

Pretty fun, don’t you think?  It isn’t perfect, but it is MUCH better than my other shirt.  I have actually worn this in public.

Now (since I had one success and one failure) a few tips:
-Use a tighter woven t-shirt.  the bleach won’t spread quite as much and you can have a more intricate design
-Use foil in the middle of the shirt to prevent bleed-through (we used cardboard the first time, the foil was easier)
-Do not use a black shirt as the bleach turns orange-ish.  Pick a color that will look good bleached out.  Test the inside hem with a dot of bleach before decorating if you are unsure what will happen.
-Rinse the bleach out under cool water and then throw it in your washing machine on a quick cycle to set it (and to prevent any random drops of bleach from ruining anything in your house).
-Don’t be sad if it doesn’t work out how you wanted.  :-) try again another day.

Making a Difference: Magdalena Concepts

Filed Under: for the girl, M.A.D series, making a difference by Katie — 6 Comments
January 3, 2012

It has been a while since we have featured a company/product in our Making a Difference series!  Today we are thrilled to introduce you to Magdalena Concepts!  We can’t think of a better “first” official 2012 blog post – lets start off the year with featuring someone who is trying making a difference!  Bear with us – this post has a lot more text than we usually do, but we think it is totally worth the read.  :-)

Jen and I first came across Magdalena Concepts when we were surfing Etsy (I know you thought I was going to say Pinterest).  :-)   We saw this t-shirt and both loved it:

{image used with permission from Magdalena Concepts}

I love what Magdalena has to say about her inspiration for making the t-shirt above:
“I created this design because I found myself baffled at how frequently Africa is refered to as if it were a single, homogenous region, and not an enormous continent full of unique nations and diverse cultures. So, I drew the 50+ countries of the mainland, and wrote their names inside their borders.
“

Its true, isn’t it?  Africa is so often referred to as if it is one gigantic country.  Of course, it isn’t!  This particular t-shirt costs $25, and you can feel good about spending that much money on a t-shirt because Magdalena Concepts has committed to donating 10% of the proceeds from this shirt, along with a few others, to GUA Africa.

GUA Africa is a non-profit organization that was started by Emmanual Jal, a Sudanese ex-child soldier (who is now a recording artist!).  Here is their mission, taken direction from GUA Africa’s website:
Our mission is to work with individuals, families and communities to help them overcome the effects of war & poverty. Our projects are based in both Sudan and Kenya with a focus on providing education to children & young adults who would otherwise be denied this opportunity.

In April 2008 we were granted full UK charity status and also received our NGO registration in South Sudan. In April 2011 we received our NGO status in Kenya.

GUA Africa is a small non-profit who is working to make life better for people in East Africa.  One of their main missions is to get an education center started called the Emma Academy – you can read more about it here.  GUA Africa also gives people the opportunity to sponsor students so they can continue their education.  Currently 30 students are being sponsored through GUA!

We want to encourage you to take some time to visit GUA Africa’s website and see what they are doing in Sudan and Kenya.  Then go to Magdalena’s Concepts and check out their shirts that help to fund this non-profit! So far over $300 has been donated!  Magdalena specifically wanted to choose an education based organization that “put their money where their mouth is.”  GUA Africa really seems to meet that criteria!

 Before we close this MAD post, we also want to note that Magdalena’s Concepts uses 100% American made t-shirts, and any shirts that don’t pass their quality inspections are donated to those in need.  This past year Magdalena’s Concepts has given 70 t-shirts to an area of Salvador, Brazil.  And I should also mention that Aaron bought me one of these shirts for Christmas!!  What a guy!  Here’s a quick snapshot we took today:

See you all tomorrow!

Do you know of a person, product, or company that is making a difference in the world?  Let us know! We’d love to do a feature post! paisleyprintshoes@gmail.com

pretty pair of socks

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl, shoes by Jen — 5 Comments
December 13, 2011

First up.  Our dear friend Stephanie over at Red Letter Paper Company is up for a HUGE award.  Her {not sent from my iPhone} cards were featured in Entrepreneur’s indie merchant gift guide! And now through Sunday (once a day) readers can vote for their favorite, which then gets a big push by Entrepreneur as THE gift to buy.  I actually bought her cards to send out for Christmas this year so I can attest to their beauty and amazing-ness.  :)   Help a sista out and go vote for her…PLEASE????  It’s super quick and easy.  Click here (or paste this into your browser http://www.entrepreneur.com/blog/222407).  Click vote.  Repeat tomorrow.  You all are rockstars…we know Steph really appreciates it.

Katie and I discovered a new obsession.  You know about our coffee and pillow fetish but did you know we have a sock fetish?  We just sort of realized it.  We’re both sitting at a coffee shop with tall striped really cute socks but they are thin which = cold feet which is sort of miserable.  We saw these socks on pinterest and loved how cozy and warm and freaking cute they are.

{image used from here}

After looking further we think they are holey and not lined (they are hand knit) so they might be just as cold as the socks we are wearing BUT we could put these over our thin socks and create cute, warm socks that would look so adorable with boots.  Am I right?

These amazing socks are from Lowie (a store in London) and are $80.  Yeah $80 is probably a bit more than we would ever spend on socks (and by probably I mean it is WAY more than we would ever spend) but we can dream right?

Maybe if I ever become amazing at knitting (I finally got some round needles) I can whip up a pair of these for Katie and myself and all of our friends.  I’ll keep you posted.  :)

plants and africa love

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Jen — 9 Comments
November 2, 2011

Happy Hump Day everyone!  Today I am thankful for plants.  I like to have plants in my office (like the one below) to cheer up my little area of heaven (or something like that).  My apartment is full of plants….all of them are the same plant as the one in my office (which I don’t even know what it is…all I know is that I can’t kill it which is why I keep replanting it…) except one which is a peace lily that desperately needs to be replanted into a larger pot.  That is one reason why I needed another plant stand (thank you thrift store…).

{image taken by me…I’ve used the same computer for almost 1.5 years and I JUST realized I can do this…}

I think it is cool how many different types of plants there are in the world…our God is a creative God isn’t he?  I also think it is cool that the simplest little plant…or flower…can brighten anybody’s day.  Have you ever given a plant to somebody and have them not smile and be delighted in your little gift?  Maybe this month I will give somebody a plant.  Or flower.  Just because.

On a side note we are up to 9 other blogs (like Jess over at Jess Cause who wants everyone to join…we do too, Jess or Ashley from Lewis in Love ) that are joining us in being thankful this November.  WOOHOO!!  It’s like we’re spreading Christmas cheer but it’s November so I guess it is Thanksgiving cheer.  Yay!  (Don’t forget to let us know if you are participating so we can add you to our blog roll!!)

Moving on.  One of our lovely readers told us something that PPS is missing…clothing for the larger girl!!  Sorry ladies, we weren’t thinking about everyone of all sizes…here is something specifically for you!

I absolutely love this t-shirt.  It’s vintage, cute, perfect for fall (squirrels collect acorns in the fall duh…) and could easily be layered.  Throw on a sweater left open or fleece and it would the perfect fall outfit!   Best part about it is it is only $16!  (If you’re wondering, the size on this shirt is XL for women.)  This store hand makes all of their shirts which makes it extra special…I just really love handmade stuff.  What do you think, would you wear this??

What I love even more is when we discover a store with products that we adore and find out that the person behind that store is incredible!  Take TinyTwistCreative for example.  Erin, the owner, has this on her store’s bio:

“Our family is using the funds made from this shop to help adopt our baby girl from the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you have a certain size that you don’t see, please message me. I may already have it or can order it. Colors are somewhat flexible, but not specific. I will be posting new sizes and colors every week or so. I will periodically be introducing a new image as well.”

(Which totally explains all of the Africa clothes like this one….which is a women’s large…)

{images used with permission from tinytwistcreative}

We LOVE LOVE LOVE helping others with the adoption process since Katie is super familiar with it.  Erin has a fantastic blog here where you can learn more about her family, the adoption process, her products and ever some other organizations that support and aid Africa!  She sounds like she could be our new BFF.  :)

And in case you were wondering, November is national Adoption Month! How cool!  If you or anyone you know of is adopting and doing fundraisers for the adoption cost let us know, we’d love to feature you!

There isn’t much else I need to say about this store…we love Africa, we love adoption, we love cute clothes…they do too…win – win – win!

The Outfit

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — 5 Comments
October 18, 2011

Jen and I are finding that it is MUCH easier to find things that we both like for the house rather than “for the girl” – i.e., clothes and accessories.  I decided to search the “women’s apparel” section on Pinterest the other day and see if I could find some stuff that struck my fancy.  (By the way, who else is loving the changes Pinterest made?  Much more intuitive if you ask me.)  I found an outfit almost right away that I IMMEDIATELY re-pinned and hoped Jen would re-pin it as well so that we could blog about it.  You can imagine my disappointment when a few days went by and I didn’t see that she repinned it.  :-(

So there we are, at Caribou on Saturday night doing our blog planning.  We had kind of hit a wall and we decided to peruse Pinterest for some inspiration.  Jen pulled the site up on her computer and on her front page was the outfit I pinned.  “I LOVE that outfit,” I told her.  Jen was quiet for a few seconds, and then she said, “you know what? I love it too!”  (I love that she had to think about it before actually deciding if she loved it or not.) I often completely forget that Jen doesn’t have internet at her house so she hadn’t had a chance to check out pinterest lately!  Here’s what we have coined The Outfit in all its glory.

How awesome is this?!  The cozy top that is a hoodie, the wide leg, dark wash jeans that hid figure flaws and go with EVERYTHING, the shoes (oh wait…ha ha!). It is so simple which is what makes it perfect (and probably why Jen had to think about it for a minute!) This outfit comes from shopbop.com, and once we took a closer look at the top we were even MORE sold on it:

{all images via shopbop.com}

The top is ACTUALLY a sweater!!  WE LOVE IT!  It is Madewell’s Sweater Knit Hoodie and you can find it here for the unfortunate cost of $88.  But, really, for a sweater that isn’t terrible.  You can also find the jeans on the same site, but we just generally love the look of boot cut dark wash jeans, so whatever you found anywhere would be great for this outfit.  Its just simply cute and simply perfect.  The End.

darn tough? hopefully.

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — 6 Comments
October 12, 2011

Last Thursday-Friday I was in Duluth with my family.  The weather was perfect, the lake was glorious, the fall colors were stunning, our long lost friends were amazing.  I almost forgot why we moved until I checked the weather a couple mornings back and it was 15 degrees COLDER in Duluth than in the Twin Cities.

Anyhow, we decided to stay in a hotel (Canal Park Lodge) when we were there, and the hotel happens to be in Canal Park right on the lake.  If you have never been to Duluth, this is what I am referring to:

The image on the left is from here.           The image on the right is from Jeff Dexheimer photography.
Of course I picked images that make Duluth look glamorous.  :-) If you are looking for some FANTASTIC photos of Duluth check out the Jeff Dexheimer link I posted above. There are some fantastic photos of that great city.  So anyway, we stayed right on the lake – we walked out of the hotel and we were basically 20 steps from the lakewalk.  It was awesome.  We walked down the lakewalk to the Fitgers building to eat at our favorite Mexican restaurant.  While we were in the Fitgers building we naturally stopped at Trailfitters, our favorite outdoor gear store.  Usually I just buy random clothes and shoes there since it is overall a little out of my price range.

While browsing all the awesome stuff at Trailfitters I decided to check out the Smartwool socks.  Being a cold-footed person I love Smartwool. Jen and I BOTH love smartwool. I have about 6 pair in my drawer…the downside being that 5 of them are so thin on the bottom from wearing them that I really only wear them at home with slippers.  Its quite annoying, since most of those pair I’ve had only for a couple of seasons, and when I spend close to $20 on a pair of socks I expect them to last longer.  Jen has also had the same problem with her Smartwools wearing out.  We both feel frustrated with the issue, but thought that there weren’t any other good options out there.

Ok, so back to being at the store.  I was looking at the socks, and all of a sudden I found these:

{image from Darn Tough’s website}

These are the merino wool socks I was wanting but they aren’t Smartwool – they are Darn Tough.  I had NEVER heard of them, but when I read this on their sock packaging I had to restrain myself from buying 4 pair right them and there (which actually wasn’t so hard to do since they were stinking $19):

SIMPLY AND WITHOUT STRINGS OR CONDITIONS:

If our socks are not the most comfortable and durable socks you have ever owned, return them for another pair or your money back.

No strings. No conditions. For life.

When you are really serious about something you make it yourself.

The stuff written above is actually from their website. Below it is the address to just send your socks back.  Crazy.  The sock packaging said something along the lines of “we guarantee these are the most durable socks you have ever worn and if you can wear them out send them back for a free exchange, no questiosn asked” or something like that.  There was a bit more emphasis on the “wearing out.”

So I bought the pair I showed you above.  I figure I’ll wear them like crazy this winter and see how they hold up.  If they hold up fantastically I’ll buy a couple more pair – and if they wear out I’ll send them back and see how slick their return policy actually is!  Darn Tough seems like a really legit company – have any of you ever gotten socks from them?  We’d love to hear your stories!

While I was purchasing the socks I noticed a bunch of stickers at the checkout that you could buy.  A bright green Minnesota sticker with the word “native” on it caught my eye.  Naturally I bought it for Jen, because that’s just the kind of sister I am.  Plus I think the sticker was kind of funny since I think it is making fun of people from Colorado.  But I’m not sure.  :-)   (any Colorado readers out there?!)  I’ll try to get a picture of it and post it later!

And BE SURE to check back tomorrow for a giveaway from one of our favorite etsy stores!!  Here’s a hint!

i think it is french

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — 1 Comment
August 31, 2011

Somehow Jen and I keep finding all these things we love that are from other countries.  We have found things from Germany, Russia, Thailand, and now France.  I’m not really sure how it happens – we come across something on pinterest or etsy and lo and behold, the thing is being sold by someone far, far away.  I love the internet and how it makes our world so much smaller!

So anyway, we came across this dress on pinterest.  I went to the site  (I think the store is called Mango) and the whole thing is in French.  The French apparently know how to make a super cute dress:

Here is the description in French:

Robe ample en tissu soyeux à col carré avec des plis décoratifs, des manches cap courtes et une ceinture froncée à la taille.

And thanks to Google Translator, here it is in English:

Ample of silky dress with square neckline with decorative folds, short cap sleeves and a belt gathered at the waist.

I think translations are funny.  :-)

So back to the dress…Jen and I would probably wear this COMPLETELY differently, which is the beauty of the dress.  It is simple enough to dress down to wear to work or pair with some bright jewelry and a fancy clutch to wear out to dinner.  You can wear basically any shoe with it which make the $53.99 price tag even MORE appealing since you have shoes in your closet you can already wear with it!  I tried to pretend to order the dress to see how much shipping to the USA was but I couldn’t really figure it out.  Bummer.  I might have actually bought it!  :-)

Lucky for you, you don’t have to spend ANY money in order to enter our MyBella GIVEAWAY tomorrow!  Jen and I are SUPER excited to host another giveaway on Paisley Print Shoes!  Come back first thing tomorrow to get the scoop!

falling for a dress

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 2 Comments
August 9, 2011

In honor of the cooler temperatures today (high of 72!!), we decided to feature an outfit that we are both dying to wear this fall.  I found this via pinterest and after a bit of digging, found this outfit belonged to Kaitlyn over at Moodboard which she blogged about back in Oct of 2010.  Good things just don’t go out of style I guess!

The dress is from Anthropologie and the boots are Loeffler Randal and sadly, neither one of them are still for sale.  Kaitlyn thrifted the clutch.  (Fortunately for you, we found a pair of boots that would work with an outfit like this that we’ll highlight in the not too distance future so stay tuned!)

{images used with permission from Kaitlyn over at Moodboard}

Katie loves this outfit because it looks comfortable (are you surprised that this is one of her reasons?), it’s simple and it’s classic.  I love the fact that it is cute enough to wear to work yet I wouldn’t feel frumpy in it.  It would also be really easy to throw on a pair of black tights and some printed knee high socks when the snow starts to fly.  (Ok, I  would throw on the knee high socks…Katie would grab some leggings…or maybe just some snowpants.)  We both would add a pair of chunky earrings with it and I would also wear a chunky ring or two.

We’ll keep our eyes open for a good alternative to this dress and let you know when we find it.  Or if you happen to know of a place to find one we’d love it if you’d tell us!

tank tops

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — Leave a comment
August 2, 2011

Jen and I have COMPLETELY different tastes in fashion.  When we can find something we both like its sure to be a winner for most people.  One thing we really like are Old Navy tank tops.  Let me list the reasons why we love them:

1. They are inexpensive – and right now, they are on SALE!

2. They come in a variety of colors and patterns.

3. They keep their shape well.

4. They come long enough to work great under other shirts.

Jen and I wear tanks under other shirts quite frequently and the Old Navy ones are usually our go-to.  We don’t need something fancy, expensive, or elaborate to wear under our other shirts.  We just need something that holds it shape well and that we won’t feel bad buying a new one in a year when the white becomes less than white and the black is that weird light-black color.  The other great thing about the Old Navy tanks is when they go on sale you can stock up!  They are usually on sale a few times over the course of the summer.

According to Old Navy’s webpage they have tank tops on sale from $3.97-$5.00!  That’s a great deal.  They also have a variety of other camis, tanks, and t-shirts for anywhere from $5-$10.  Looks like I’ll be making a run to Old Navy to see what I can find!
