adoption day

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 11 Comments
March 29, 2013

Hey All!

I just wanted to pop in on this REALLY Good Friday to let you know that Elias’ adoption was FINALIZED yesterday!  We went to the courthouse and 15 minutes later he is legally, officially our SON!

IMG_9721apps

The judge asked me a bunch of questions, basically “do you know you can’t change your mind, this is permanent, do you feel this is the best interest of the child, blah blah blah” for about 5 minutes.  Then she says to Aaron, “do you agree with what she just said?”  HA!  Aaron got off easy.  Then at the very end, she announced that he will now be known as Elias instead of his birth name!  (We kept his birth name for his middle name).  And BOOM, done.  (Except we still had to write out $100 more worth of checks.  Boo.  But THEN we were done.)  No more paperwork or check writing for us!

As a side note – does anyone know how to take pictures of kids so there isn’t a glare in their glasses?  I am almost thinking about taking Matea’s glasses in to get that anti-glare coating put on them.  I feel sad that there is a glare.  :-(

In somewhat related news – today is Good Friday.  The day that Jesus died on the cross.  Good because he was the final sacrifice.  Good because we can now have a right relationship with God with a single breath.  Good, because he allows us to be adopted as his children.  How fitting that as we celebrate Elias’ adoption this week we get to think about the sacrifice of Jesus to allow us to have a Father up in Heaven.  Thank you, Jesus.  How thankful I am to be able to call you Father.  And to know that you will never leave me.  How I look forward to the joy that will come Easter morning!

the feels-like-friday free for all

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 4 Comments
March 28, 2013

It’s FRIDAY!!!  Oh wait.  It’s not.  But I don’t have to go to work tomorrow so that makes it FEEL like Friday!  And that, my friends, makes me really really happy.

First up, please don’t forget to hop on over to this post and give me all of your name ideas for my store!  We’ve received a ton of fabulous ideas but want to make sure everyone submits their names before we pick.  And don’t forget there is a bar of Hand in Hand soap in it for whoever comes up with the best name!

And because it feels like Friday, I am going show you some of my favorite pins from the past couple weeks.

First up, this part of someone’s home (or maybe it’s just a staged closet for a photoshoot…I of course haven’t clicked through the pin to the actual site yet…).  I mostly pinned this for the colors.  I love them.  I’m thinking I want to do a fuschia and gold in addition to my black and white for my bedroom.

Thoughts?

Next up, this whole ensemble.  I don’t even need to say anything about it…it’s just amazing.  Yep.

Source: longhairstyleshowto.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

And next, these eggs.  Seriously how funny are they??  My roommate and I are hosting Easter this year and it would be pretty funny to have these randomly around the house for when everyone showed up.  I doubt it will happen because this requires planning and I typically fail in the planning department so we’ll just pretend I did them and I dropped them and they all broke.  Sound good?

Source: asubtlerevelry.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

And lastly, this quote.  It is so true! Don’t forget to be true to yourself.

Source: Uploaded by user via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

With that, have a fabulous day and don’t forget to send us your name ideas!!  I need all the help I can get!  :)

the willow tree project wedding invites

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — Leave a comment
March 27, 2013

It’s that season.  You know the one.  The one where everyone and their mother is getting engaged and announcing they’re pregnant.  (Ok, maybe not everyone’s mother but you know what I mean.)  Maybe it’s just a MN thing but in spring there is a huge spike of people who are announcing they’re expecting a baby or getting married (people just don’t have anything else better to do in the winter than plan big life events…)

Katie seems to be mostly done with the wedding phase of her life but is full force of friends having/adopting babies.  I seem to be in the middle of both – one of my dearest friends from college just asked me to be in her wedding and I currently have 5 friends who are pregnant.

For those of you in the wedding phase of your life you’re in luck.  Today we’re featuring a fabulous new wedding invite company that is local to Minneapolis.  Meet Gary and Angela.

willow tree

After researching wedding invitation options for their own wedding, Gary and Angela found out that most companies make their invitations seem reasonable, until you get to the bottom line after adding up all the hidden fees.  They wanted something that was quality but also personalized to them as a couple and to their wedding day.

Gary is the owner of Point Zero Designs and graphic designer by trade.  After designing and constructing their own wedding invitations, they began to design invitations for friends and family. This led them to start their own invitation company in which they could provide high quality, personalized invitations as well as work together as a married couple.

Gary and Angela have designed quite a few fabulous looking invites.  They did a tree design for their own wedding.

If you are going with a more vintage feel for your wedding you could go with their antique design.

A modern feel seems to be popping up more and more lately and Willow Tree has taken a wedding invite approach to this style.

They’ve even done a nature design which is absolutely perfect for people like my roommate who loves birds.

The Willow Tree Project offers hand crafted wedding invitations and accessories printed on gorgeous, thick paper in your weddings colors. With 30 different color options to choose from, they can start your special day off in the most perfect way. The Willow Project offers the best in printing, paper, service and their quality cannot be matched!

They can do orders of Invitations, Programs and Thank you Cards or offer a discounted rate when you choose more than one option! They also are able to create a personalized design to suit your needs at an additional cost.

And we have FABULOUS news for our PPS readers.  Willow Tree Project is offering all of our readers either a FREE custom design OR 10% off a current design just by mentioning that you found them through us.

bring on the prints?

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — 3 Comments
March 26, 2013

I remember when Aaron and I bought our Subaru Forester 8 years ago.  I had never had a Forester, I actually didn’t really even know what one was, but when we got one I started seeing them EVERYWHERE.  And I mean everywhere.  I knew they were around before, but I had never noticed them before.

Can anyone relate?

So here we are, a couple weeks past the Macy’s 5 Essentials Fashion show where Jamie Krell told us that printed pants were one of the 5 essentials to have.  The other 4?  Not surprising – We’ve sen pullovers, dresses, peplum, and lace.  But printed pants, nope.

Now I’m starting to see them EVERYWHERE.  Am I noticing them now because Jamie brought it up, or have they always been around and I’ve just failed to take note?

The first place printed pants popped up was on one of my favorite style blogs, Putting Me Together.  Audrey did this post last week where she featured some of her recent purchases – two of which were PRINTED PANTS.

Source: puttingmetogether.com viaKatie on Pinterest

Printed pants also showed up on Kendi Everyday….

Source: kendieveryday.com viaKatie on Pinterest

Then TODAY I get an email from the Gap that says this:

gap

Hmmm, so very interesting.  I just don’t know if I can get into this one or not….but it is beginning to show up!!  I just don’t really see this trend sticking around for very long.  (Look at me, talking like I know all this stuff about fashion – HA HA!).  We’ll keep you posted if either one of us buys a pair of printed pants.  It would more likely be Jen over me.   Usually I come on to a trend about 2 years later.

Are you seeing printed pants anywhere?  Can you imagine buying any?

the great name contest

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 14 Comments
March 25, 2013

For those of you who have been around Paisley Print Shoes long enough you know that I am in the process of starting my own store.  (If you’re new to PPS and have no idea what I’m talk about check out this post.)  I took January and February off  from really working it since I had my Europe trip and I moved…and then I inadvertently took March off while I was at it.  I am finally back at it.  I have  spring kickoff show scheduled, some fabulous new products and I’m ready to Make a Difference!

The one problem is the name.

logo

Right now we are calling it Paisley Print Shoes The Store.  We already have the branding and everything for PPS and we have followers and people who recognize the name Paisley Print Shoes.  But it doesn’t necessarily encompass the vision of the store (which is basically to have a store that everything in it is Making A Difference in the world…and I don’t sell shoes :) ).

This is where you guys come in.

So many of our readers are creative geniuses and have their own etsy shop, photography business or card company.  I know at some point you were exactly where I am….trying to figure out a name.  Maybe you think Paisley Print Shoes works.  Maybe you have a grand idea of what it should be.  Maybe you have a few ideas you think are mediocre but maybe I’ll think they’re fabulous.

Any and all suggestions, ideas, and comments are welcome and much much appreciated!

BUT WAIT there’s INCENTIVE!!!!

If I pick the name you suggested I will send you a bar of Hand in Hand soap for being the winner!!  I’m kind of obsessed with this soap.  If you’re an Anthropologie shopper there is a good chance you have seen it there.  If not, let me tell you, it smells absolutely amazing and bonus- it is making a difference in the world!

HandinHandSoap_IMG_6741

It is ethically harvested from sustainable resources made up of 100% natural ingredients. It is triple milled Shea butter soap that is sure to be soothing to your skin and senses, gentle on our environment, and a beautiful compliment to your home.  For every bar purchased, Hand in Hand will donate a bar to help save a child’s life. Buy a bar, give a bar.  For every bar purchased, Hand in Hand will save 50 square feet of rainforest.

So get those creative juices flowing and comment (or email us at paisleyprintshoes@gmail.com) with your suggestions!!  Be sure to pass this on to all of your creative friends as well…if someone you sent our way wins you may just win some soap as well.  ;)

WOW EVERYONE!

Thanks so much for all the encouragement on yesterday’s post!!  I am excited (well, that might be stretching it) to try this 5k and see what I can do.  The following exchange happened on twitter and it got us thinking:

photo

Anyone else running any races this summer?

Want to start an online running club?

Ok, well, it wouldn’t really be an online running club, but more or less we intentionally encourage each other in regards to whatever level of race we are trying to do.

If you have been following us for any amount of time, we sincerely hope that you know that we LOVE to encourage other people.  We think it is something God has just put in our hearts to do!  It brings us (and we think, Him!) such joy.  And since you are all people we connect with, it would be so much fun to encourage YOU!  Here’s our thought – if you are a blogger (or non blogger!), and you are running or walking some sort of race this summer, we would LOVE to figure out a way that we can all connect.  If this is something you are interested in, leave a comment or zip us an email at paisleyprintshoes@gmail.com  Jen and I would love to figure out a way to keep each other updated!  (it might just be a sidebar thing we can all use, or a day we all “check in,” or a twitter hashtag thingee or SOMETHING.  Ideas welcome.)

encourage {image from Amen Printables on Etsy}

So there you have it.  Jen and I need encouragement too!  Jen is trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon this year.  She can definitley attain it, but not without some work!  And if I can run an entire 5k it will be nothing short of a miracle (I literally cannot run 2 blocks).  We will be checking in periodically on the blog to let you know where we are at with things.  Don’t worry, it won’t be a fitness blog.  :-)   Just our usual mish mash of things we both love – or, in this case, things we are both doing, cuz I don’t love running.  Ha!

So let us know if you are interested in connecting with us!  We’d love to hear from you.

the non-runner and the runner

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 11 Comments
March 19, 2013

It’s Tuesday.  Let’s talk about running for a minute.

If you know us and our blog, you know we are polar opposites in most things.  Running is one of those things.  If you remember, I did a full last January and my 8th half last June.  Katie never runs but she is always our faithful fan.  That girl sacrifices hours of sleep to get up at the crack of dawn to cheer us on for the whole 30 seconds we see her as we run past.  That’s dedication.

So clearly, I like to run.

Source: ilbelfarniente.wordpress.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

And Katie does not.

Source: iwastesomuchtime.com via Sarah on Pinterest

My total race count is 1 full marathon, 8 half marathons and about a million races between 1 and 8 miles (I know, I’m so specific aren’t I).  This is me finishing my first full (in case you didn’t click the link above).

jen and matt

I don’t think Katie has ever run a race (besides a year in track but she hated it).

Source: Uploaded by user via Amber on Pinterest

Well people, it’s a big year…that’s right folks, KATIE IS RUNNING A 5K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  (That is 3.1 miles for you non-runners.)

Source: lysswunsch.tumblr.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

We are all so proud of Katie for even thinking about running much less signing up for an actual race.
This is kind of a big deal for our family.

Source: dineanddish.net via Ann on Pinterest

Every year we all trek up to Duluth for Grandma’s half marathon.  My parents and I do it ever year and we’ve since recruited our cousin Emily to join in on the fun.  Every year we finish and everyone always says how much they would love to eventually run a race.

Everyone that is, except Katie.

She very proudly states that she hates running (nevermind the fact that she is at the finish line of a marathon where she is surrounded by hundreds of runners – lucky for her they all can barely move from finishing their respective races) and she will never be caught dead running.

But this year Katie is pulling it together and running a 5k.  She’s being joined by my roommate, our aunt and uncle, our cousin and her boyfriend and her husband.  I’m telling you people – this is a big event.  Go big or go home.  :)

So we want to know.  Are any of our faithful readers runners?  Or non-runners who maybe someday might possibly want to run a race?  Or do you despise running with a passion?  Any of the above are cool with us.

And second, do you want to hear of our training progress?  You can get the viewpoint of a new-to-running runner training for her first 5k and a sort-of-seasoned runner training for a marathon.

So, seriously, what’s do you think?  No for real.  Tell us what you are think.  We are being serious.  Comment and let us know.  :)

5 essentials for spring

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — 9 Comments
March 18, 2013

Happy Monday everyone!

We hope you had a fantastic weekend.  We’re super excited about today’s blog post.  Last Thursday we were able to attend a fashion show at Macy’s in Minneapolis hosted by the AMAZING Jamie Krell!

So. Much. Fun.  This was my first ever fashion show and I was surprised by how much fun I had!  The theme for the evening was the 5 Essentials you should have for spring fashion.  There were 5 categories and we saw 5 looks within each category.  Because the theme of our blog is finding things that we BOTH like, we are going to highlight the styles that most appealed to both of us.  We hope you like photos…because we’re excited to share what we like and see if you like it, too!

The first Spring essential you should have is LACE.

We love the following two looks:

Tracy R MazMara dress

Kim Rachel/Rachel Roy Dress

Aren’t they stunning?  So simple yet elegant at the same time.  Jamie suggested throwing on a denim shirt or cute blazer over either one of these to dress them down for the work or for a luncheon.   The following lace look really threw us for a loop – when this model came out I thought she was wearing lingerie!

Alyssa Kenzie White sweater/Kensie Coral shorts

While I don’t think we’ll be wearing lace shorts anytime soon, we do like the look of the mixed patterns (lace and polka dots) and incorporating lace in a fun color in an unexpected place.  Also, being in Minnesota, it is not unusual to be wearing shorts and then throw on something long sleeve in the evening when it gets cool!  Definitely will put the idea of this outfit in the back of my mind.

Essential #2 is PEPLUM.

I admit it – I cannot get into peplum at all.  Jen, however, was wearing peplum Thursday night!!  She is so good with fashion you guys!  This was one of her favorite peplum looks that we saw:

Tracy R Barlll dress

I could totally see Jen wearing this.  Check out the back of the shoes the model is wearing:

Love the neon!  I’m not sure if I would ever buy them, but the pop of color on the shoes was amazing with the outfit!

Spring essential #3 is PRINTED PANTS.

We saw a wide variety of printed pants.  Jamie Krell mentioned that she LOVES this trend and wears printed pants all the time!  I’m trying to wrap my brain around this idea.  :-) I used to think colored jeans were crazy and now I love them, so, I’m wondering if that is what will happen with printed pants!  Here are a few looks;  I think I could wear the pants in the second look below.

Tracy R Barlll top/Barlll pants

Alyssa Lanvin cape t-shirt/Philosophy pants

Kim Rachel/Rachel Roy jacket, camisole, pants

Spring essential #4 is a DRESS.

We love dresses.  So easy to just throw one on and go.  Here are the two dresses that Jen and I liked the most:

Tracy R Missoni dress

Kim French Connection dress

The final Spring essential is THE PULLOVER.

Again, we love the idea of a pullover.  So easy! You can even layer a pullover:

Alyssa Marc by Marc Jacobs jacket and blouse, Rachel/Rachel Roy sweatshirt, Hudson Navy jeans

I had to laugh at the final look we were shown.  I think if someone made an outfit combining my taste and Jen’s taste it would be something like this:

Kim Marc by Marc Jacobs pullover, 7 for Mankind jeans

Jen would wear a printed sweater, I would wear it in gray.  Jen wears scarves all the time and I live in jeans.  We both love flip flops.  I like casual looks but Jen would wear a cropped top like the one above.  Kind of fun!

We would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the looks above, and if you can get into any of the 5 Spring Essentials!  Jen and I were able to chat with Jamie for a while after the fashion show.  She was AMAZING.  So down to earth and so kind.  We had a blast talking with her!

Thank you so much to Macy’s for having us!!  We had a blast!

I am a member of the Everywhere Society and Everywhere provided me with compensation for this post about Macy’s Culinary Council.  However, all thoughts and opinions expressed herein are my own.

oh so trendy

Filed Under: clothing, for the girl by Katie — 5 Comments
March 14, 2013

I was chatting with my cousin online today (Hi Emily!) and told her I was supposed to be writing a blog post but ideas were escaping me.  Hard to believe, isn’t it?  Ha.  Real bloggers always have ideas…right?  Anyway, she sent me a link to Glamour magazine’s “most wearable spring trends.”  Seeing as Jen and I are headed to a spring fashion show at Macy’s tonight I thought I’d show you three of the trends and see what you all think.

Now, if you have been following us for any sort of time you will probably have realized that Jen is the more fashionable one of the two of us.  She always has been, always will be.  But I’m not sure even JEN will wear a few of these trends.  They are a little bizaare.  Brace yourself.

Apparently if you buy one thing this spring you are supposed to buy a “shorts suit.”  Hmmm.

source: Glamour

What, buy a suit and then wear half a shirt under it?  Really?  Then you could throw on your statement sunglasses….

source: Glamour

…which all look just like the sunglasses that my two year old got for her birthday.

Then we have what Glamour refers to as “peekaboo pieces.”

source: Glamour

We sort of think this trend had to be inspired by Ashley Herbert from The Bachelorette.  She seemed like she was always wearing sheer tops on her season.  :-)   Basically, I don’t think we’ll be wearing many of the trends in the the list from Glamour (there are ten of them).  Will you?  It will be interesting to see what they tell us tonight at the fashion show!!  I hope we see some more “wearable”outfits.  We will let you know!

macy’s prom fashion

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 2 Comments
March 12, 2013

I am a member of the Everywhere Society. Everywhere provided me with compensation however all thoughts and opinions expressed herein are my own.

This summer I have my 10 year reunion.  Yep. 10.  Scary.  Because of this fantastic milestone it is perfect that Katie got us an in for a prom fashion show hosted by Macy’s!

I asked a few of the high school girls that I mentor from my church if they wanted to go and decided to hit it up.  What girl doesn’t like to try on pretty dresses and get their hair and makeup done for free?  (Well, Katie clearly doesn’t since she didn’t go…)

I got to the fashion show and unfortunately, all of us bloggers were told the wrong time.  (Cue the sad music.)  Lame.  I totally missed the whole show!

Luckily though, the Macy’s girls who were in charge of the event (they weren’t the ones who told us the wrong time) were fabulous.  They brought me over to meet Mandi Line who styles for Pretty Little Liars.  Pretty much my dream job.

Source: Uploaded by user via Jena Allison on Pinterest

She was so cool!  Super down to earth and really nice.  We chatted for a bit and then I decided to get my hair done.  I had a date later on that night so the stylist promised to make me look hot.

I think she did a pretty darn good job.  (Minnesota people – she’s from Jon English Salon in Uptown…Trinity is her name. Look her up.)

I also got my eyes done up.  I wish I had my own stylist and makeup artists to do me up every day.  Wouldn’t that be so great?  (This is not me…thi is our friend Kelly from Muddy Flowers.)

While all this was going on I jammed out to a DJ and scoped out the dresses.

There were some pretty ones and some pretty scandalous ones.  Do dads seriously let their daughters out in dresses like this??  It looks like they forgot half the fabric like this one.

Source: windsorstore.com via WindsorStore on Pinterest

I found a feathery one that I loved.  One of the girls I was with said it looked like a chicken.  Chicken or not, I loved it.

What do you think??  (This dress is down to my knees but you can’t really see that in this picture..)  You also can’t really tell how fabulous my hair and makeup are but trust me – they’re totally glam (my date even told me I looked really good….don’t worry, I didn’t wear the dress).

If you have a daughter or friend who is going to prom I highly recommend this event.  What a fun way to get your prom dress and a few ideas for your hair and makeup (not to mention meet a celebratory or two).

Thanks Macy’s for the fun event!
