bedside stand makeover

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 8 Comments
April 29, 2013

It’s Monday. And guess what – I GET to work! My pastor’s been doing a series on faith in the workplace and it has been really good for me. I sort of suck at bringing faith to the workplace so hopefully I can take some of the lessons he taught and actually put them to good use.

Katie and I had busy weekends! Katie was gone all weekend at a women’s retreat with her church. I babysat her kids Friday night and spent the night (her husband wasn’t going to be home till 11ish and there is no way I was going to last to 11). I also gave Matea (Katie’s oldest) date cards for her birthday – one of those was a sleepover at her house – so she used that up. This of course meant a wake up call about 7am. On a Saturday. Awesome.

Adlee always wears my shoes around so of course she put them on right when she got up to. Love it! Sunday I spray painted a bunch of stuff. Because dude, it was nice enough to spray paint – WOOHOO!!

I’m in re-do my room mode and I’m basing it on these two pins.

I’m loving the gold and hot pink.

Source: littlebitsoflovely.blogspot.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

My room had a muted pink which I like initially but then I decided I needed some color. And hey – I’m still single so I might as well have a hot pink bedroom while I can! :)

One of the things I painted today was my bedside stand.  It looked like this.

photo(93)

I think I bought it at a garage sale last year. Maybe. Don’t quote me on that. It’s served it boring brown purpose well. Until now.

After a few coats of some fabulously bright pink spray paint, this is what it looks like now.

photo(94)

Thoughts? Do you like? I had bought a gold spray paint for my dresser but when I used it I realized it was more of a glitter paint, not a gold color. I still did my dresser that color (pics to come later) but also did the bottom of the night stand legs too. You can kind of see that. They look more gold in person. And of course I didn’t tape off the top part or anything (since it was still sticky from doing it 5 minutes earlier) so it isn’t the best look. Maybe one of these days I’ll make it look all pristine. Doubtful but you never know.

photo(92)

I’ll get some photos of how my room is coming along soon. I’m really really happy with the progress!

So did anyone else get outside and do some spray painting or garage saling this weekend?

it’s official – we hate snow

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 7 Comments
April 23, 2013

It snowed again last night.

I remember back in December when it would snow and I would get all giddy and watch it come down while drinking some cocoa.

It looked so pretty back then!

Source: mydesignchic.wordpress.com via Kristine on Pinterest

Now when it snows I close all the curtains, blast the heat and sit under blankets pretending it’s 80 and August.

We now feel like this.

Source: collegecandy.com via Jana on Pinterest

And seriously – if this is you, please stop!!

Source: datehookup.com via Penny on Pinterest

Maybe by my birthday in AUGUST we will have normal temperatures and no more snow. A girl can dream, right?

Katie and I are both training for running races – Katie’s training for her first 5k and I’m training for a marathon.  This whole winter at the end of April is really messing with our plans. I typically like running in the winter but when I check the weather and it says 40s and I pack capris and a long sleeve to run in and I leave work and attempt a run in a blizzard with no hat, no jacket, nothing that is practical in 20 degree blowing snow weather then I strongly dislike running in the winter.

With that being said my marathon training has been going decently well! I did 16 miles just under an 8 minute mile pace which I was really excited about. I have to run an 8:12 pace to qualify for Boston so I’m right on track. Only 10.2 miles to go……

Moving on.

I found this bathroom on pinterest a while back and am kind of obsessed. It looks so happy and cheerful!

Source: flickr.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

We have a plant in our bathroom but that is about how far we go to matching this room.  :)   Maybe when I actually own a house I will do something like this.

Katie and I will be attempting to be better bloggers as soon as the snow melts. When that finally happens we will be sharing some of the following:

my closet makeover

my bedroom decorating (I’m only like 1/4 of the way through this so this will be good motivation)

Katie’s bedroom decoration

and Katie’s closet overhaul

We also will continue updating you on our running progress (assuming the snow ever melts and we actually continue running). We hope you all have beautiful Tuesdays!

Jen and I have bloggers block.

I literally cannot think of ANYTHING worthwhile to talk about.

The weather is finally changing, so that makes me happy.  Today or tomorrow actually might be the last day to wear an outfit like this:

outfit {source}

Jen and I both really LOOOOVE this layered look.  And it is perfect for a cool, but not cold day.  When it is too cold I can’t leave my shirts unbuttoned like that.  Maybe I have a weird quirk, I don’t know.  But anyway, after Tuesday the weather finally is going to warm up around here which brings us great hope for things like spring.

I decided, too, that I am going to arrange my pinterest clothing boards to a fall/winter board and a spring/summer board.  You people in temperate climates don’t know how easy you have it.  Honestly.  We from down jackets and long johns to tank tops and shorts and EVERYTHING in between.

Sigh.

Spring is coming.

Sedona & prayer

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 3 Comments
April 17, 2013

Hey all!  If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter you know that I took a last minute trip to Sedona with one of my good friends from Duluth.  It was pretty much the perfect trip ever. We did a whole lot of relaxing. :) We sat at the pool, read books, drank summer-y drinks, sat at coffeeshops and ate some delicious food.

The more times I spend near mountains the more I realize I’m a mountain girl. I am just in awe at their beauty! God’s creation is pretty amazing, isn’t it?

photo 1(12)

My friend and I stopped at Red Rocks State Park one of the days to take some pictures of the scenery. The ranger laughed at us when he asked us where our hiking boots were and we showed him our flip flops and wanted to make sure we had water bottles with us and we held up our coffee.  Seriously people, it was a 1.7 mile walk. No need to get crazy! There were lots of people with walking sticks, full on water bottle belts and gear you would see if you were on a safari.

This is what we looked like.

photo 2(14)

And guess what – we survived. At one point one of the ladies with the walking stick and water bottle belt walked by us and excitedly pointed out our coffee.  Pretty sure she was jealous.

I was really really happy in this picture.

photo 3(8)

Mountains, coffee, SUNSHINE, WARM WEATHER and of course, a cute hat…you would be to right?  :)

The day this photo was taken was Monday. Monday was when the Boston Marathon explosions happened. We do not want to dwell on the negative but as a runner who is trying to qualify for Boston this shook me to the core, just like the Sandy Hook shootings shook Katie to the core.

photo(91)

{fa friend sent me this – unsure of the source}

When something traumatic happens and you can so easily see yourself in that situation it makes it harder to get over it. Katie and I are praying for all those impacted by Monday’s events. If this is you and you have a specific prayer request, please let us know. We would love to pray alongside you.

And for those of you who may not feel quite as impacted by Boston, pay special attention to your friends, family and those you come in contact with on a daily basis. Maybe you have runner friend needs a gentle reminder this week that God is in charge of this whole thing and His grace and mercy will shine through. Maybe your friend needs you to tell them to stop watching the news or maybe they just need a listening ear. We serve a God who is great and mighty and who will shine through in all situations – including this one.

john 14 17

And let this be a reminder to all of us to slow down, share a kind word – even with a stranger, and to tell those close to us how much we love them.

C25K – checking in

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 4 Comments
April 16, 2013

Today I finished day 6 of my couch to 5k training program!

I LOVE RUNNING!

No, I don’t.

Here is part of the reason why:

cold
Please note that the “feel like” temp is only 31 and that the winds are 17 ridiculous miles per hour.  Also keep in mind that I “ran” several hours ago when it was only 32 and a “feel like” temperature of 22.  Yes, I checked.  I was cold.

Spring refuses to come to Minnesota.  I don’t know what is going on.  We currently have 5 inches of snow on the ground and I’m not sure what it feels like to be warm.  I also stopped shaving my legs regularly again.  TMI?  Maybe.  But I do not see wearing skirts or shorts anytime in the forseeable future.

somebody posted this photo on my facebook page

ms mn

I digress.

Running is going ok.  I don’t know if you can call it “running.”  I don’t enjoy it yet, but I am very happy and proud of myself when I finish each training session.  By the time the lady tells me “start walking” my lungs are burning, but I can run the whole time I am supposed to.  I start a new week on Wednesday, which means more running and less walking so we’ll see how my lungs and legs handle it.

I’ll keep you posted.

I am hoping that someday in the next month or two I’ll be writing a post saying, “Running was so hard today because it was so hot out!”  At this point I just cannot even fathom that happening.

confession

Filed Under: for the soul by Katie — 8 Comments
April 12, 2013

I wanted to share with you guys a story.  I’m choosing to be a little vulnerable here, so, please be nice.  :-)

As you may know, I have a biracial family.  We look like this (except this was taken last summer so we all look older):

family pic I have friends who look completely different from me.  I go to a relatively diverse church.  One of my husband’s closest friends is from Cameroon.  I have very few issues with skin color (I am not going to say I have things figured out, but we are working hard at it).  If you had asked me if I struggled with prejudice about the way people look I would have said that THAT is one area of life that is not a consistent struggle for me.

Some people at my church wear traditional African dress to Sunday services.  I love it.  I don’t give it a second thought.   Some people wear jeans and some people go all out.  Clothing at my church is not something I really even think about.  Until last Sunday.

I was at church and there was a young lady there, maybe 20ish, who was dressed in what I thought to be Amish clothing.  It surprised me.  We typically don’t have Amish people show up at church, and the Twin Cities does not have a thriving Amish community like other parts of the country.  So anyway, this young woman stood out to me.

This past Sunday I happened to be helping out with some stuff during the services with some friends, and I saw this girl kind of wandering around.  There weren’t really any other people around besides myself and my friends that I was helping.  As I looked at the girl, I said to my friend Marnie, “so, what is her story?”  Marnie answered, “she is Mennonite.  She is visiting here.  You should go introduce yourself, she is thinking about coming to the women’s retreat.”

I thought about going to talk to her, but I decided against it.  My friends already met her, so I didn’t need to.  Later, as I was leaving church, I saw this Mennonite girl talking with a different friend of mine, Elisabeth, and I very briefly introduced myself and said hi.  The end, off I went.

Monday evening Marnie and Elisabeth were over to hang out.  We got to talking about this young girl at church.  Elisabeth grew up Mennonite and was telling us about how neat it was to be able to connect with her.  And then Elisabeth said something that I KNOW God wanted me to hear.  She said, “I’ve been texting her over the past day and soon I need to tell her that she needs to change into some different clothes.  It is hard for people to look past the clothes and see the person.”

doll

It was like I got smacked in the head.  A lightbulb came on.  I was that person.

The reason I didn’t go talk to this girl was because of the way she was dressed.  I told myself I didn’t know how to relate to her.  I told myself I didn’t know what I would say to her.  I told myself she had already met others and didn’t need to meet anybody else.  But none of that was true.  I was intimated by her clothes and thus chose to not interact with her.

I pride myself on being able to look past skin color, but apparently I can’t look past clothing choices.  What does that say about my heart?!

I am so very very thankful for God revealing this to me.  I learned a lesson.  One I intend to not forget.  I told Marnie and Elisabeth my thoughts and told them that I had not talked to her because of her clothes….so I have made my confession to friends, and now to you all.  I know that I am a work in progress, and that God is not finished with me yet…and He chose to reveal a place in my heart that I had not even realized that I had not surrendered to Him.  I am thankful he revealed it gently.

I hope to see this young lady again.  From now on, it’ll be different.

the random tuesday post

Filed Under: for the girl by Jen — 4 Comments
April 9, 2013

Hey everyone!  It’s Tuesday.  Who watched the big game last night??  I did. I’m glad it was at least close and there were some fabulous dunks!  (I don’t know much about basketball but I do know a good dunk when I see one.)

I probably should have made this for last night.  Holy amazing.

So Katie and I are really sad that there is SNOW in the forecast but we are trying to not let it ruin the week.  It’s kind of hard though.  I do get to jet off to Sedona for a long weekend with one of my girlfriends from Duluth so at least I’ll get a bit of warmth for a few days.  This cold weather is really starting to urk us.

When the weather gets like this I like to look at pictures from last summer and remind myself how grossly hot it was.  Like this one from the 5k we ran on the 4th of July and it was like 120 degrees out.  We were profusely sweating before the race even started.

2087

Or this one from my friend Kendra’s art show. I don’t really remember how hot it was but I do remember picking out a black dress so you couldn’t see my sweat and having to purchase water at a convenience store because we were all so hot.  I’m pretty much anti buying water (since it’s free from the faucet duh) so it’s only in emergencies that I buy some.

601

(Katie I need more photos of you.)

I am excited for the day when we can walk through meadows and pick flowers to fill our beautiful crystal vases for the glorious parties we will throw.  (Or the fact that we can get flowers for cheap at the grocery store…can’t say we ever have actually picked flowers.  Or walked through a meadow. Don’t mind me…the cold has frozen my brain.)

Are any of our bloggy friends getting this awful weather?  Misery loves company you know….we’d love to hear about your terrible weather to make us feel better.  :)

for life

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 6 Comments
April 8, 2013

Happy Monday everyone!

Once again, we hope your weekends were good.  Mine was great.  On Saturday I zipped up to Duluth for a very fast trip.  Some dear friends, Luke and Becca, adopted a baby a couple weeks ago and I went up for Becca’s baby shower!  Their little boy, Caleb, is one of the CUTEST babies I have EVER seen.  I think everyone says that about babies, but this one is seriously ADORABLE.  He has so much hair I can’t stand it.  I also can’t stand it that I forgot to take pictures at the baby shower.  Sigh.  I think I was just enjoying the moments hanging out with friends that I haven’t seen in a while, so I guess it is ok.

Anyhow, I had the privilege of doing a little devotional for Becca and baby Caleb at the shower.  I spent a few minutes talking about the characteristics of Caleb in the Bible, and how we can apply that to our lives.  Then I read a couple pages out of one of my favorite adoption books, Adopted for Life.

adopted-for-life-1

I know it is a little weird that I did a book plug last week and one this week, but since this one is fresh in my mind I wanted to mention it here on the blog.  If you are considering adoption, know someone who has adopted, or you have adopted, I’d highly recommend this book.  As the subtitle suggests, the author is a Christian and the first part of this book provides a theological basis for adoption (don’t worry, it isn’t a hard read).  The second part of the book has more of the practical aspects of adoption.  This is, by far, my favorite book about adoption so far.

One more fun thing.  A few weeks ago I found a necklace on pinterest that said “y’all” on it.  I thought it would be SO FUN to get Becca and myself matching necklaces since both our sons were born down in Texas.  Unfortunately, the price for that particular necklace was waaaay out of my price range.  Etsy to the rescue.  I found etsy store Sierra Metal Design and had the PERFECT necklace made that not only incorporated the “y’all”, but I also added a Bible passage that talks about God adopting each of us.  I love it.  The price was perfect, it came fast, and Alicia was awesome to work with.  Here is what she made:

photo

I just love it!  Well, there you have it.  A new piece of jewelry to love and a new book to read.  :-)   I hope you guys have a fantastic Monday!

C25K, thoughts and advice needed.

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 9 Comments
April 4, 2013

I STARTED.

On Tuesday I started my couch to 5K program!  I went out for a “run” (can you even call it that?) during the kids’ nap time – don’t worry, Aaron works from home so an adult was here.  The sun was out, the temps were in the mid 30s, I suck at running so I figured I’d be dying hot by the time I got back.

I was so wrong.

I did not take into account the windchill being 22 degrees with a 14mph breeze blowing.  I didn’t take into account that the C25K program SLOWLY progresses you into running….unlike what I usually do if I ever try to run, which is run as fast and as hard and as long as I can until I feel like I’m going to die and then walk which, lets be real, is usually like 3-4 blocks.  If that.

So by the time I got home my ears and hands felt like they were going to freeze off.  But, I did it!!!
At the end of day 1:
30 minutes
2.5 miles
froze my hands and ears
remembered that I hate running (a good playlist on my ipod might help)

look feel

So here’s what I’m wondering….I’m not really TRYING to lose weight or anything, but since I am documenting this “training” should I weigh myself and take measurements?  I don’t know.  I weigh myself a few times a month and NEVER measure.  Thoughts?

Also, I frequently get shin splints.  I need a new pair of shoes and I need to stretch, but how do I prevent them?  I don’t run often at ALL (i’m a workout video girl) so I am super paranoid, especially since my shins do feel a little sore today….I am a bit of a hypochondriac, but if these are shin splints coming on I need them to GO AWAY.  Help?

a book a day

Filed Under: for the girl by Katie — 6 Comments
April 2, 2013

Hey everyone!
I hope you all had a great April Fool’s day.  I hate April Fools.  I am not a huge fan of practical jokes.  Just getting that out there.

I have ZERO motivation to blog.  Know why?  I am in the middle of a good book.  One I am reading every single evening and therefore have not had much motivation for blogging.

voice-in-the-wind

Francine Rivers is one of my VERY FAVORITE authors.  My all time #1 favorite book is by her – Redeeming Love.  Have you ever read it?  It is SO good.  It is sort of a modern retelling of the story of Hosea in the Bible – and how he marries a prostitute.  Francine is a Christian and her books definitely have a Christian tone to them, so you know whatever you are reading is going to be clean.  ;-)

Francine writes really great, clean, historical/romance novels.  Her books are not smutty AT ALL.  They have an amazing historical content to them…the one I am reading right now is during the time of the Gladiators and when Rome was at its height of power – I think maybe around 60-80AD(?).  I also just love how Francine adds the romance aspect to her books without making it nasty.  I feel like I am reading a great chick book!

Ok, I am done writing this post so now I am going to go back to reading.  I’ll try to have some more content for you soon….but just know that I am soaking up a good book.  How I love to read!

Do you have any favorite authors?  What is your favorite type of book?
