You guys, I gave in.
This weekend I started Season 1 of Downton Abbey on Netflix. I finished it this weekend too.
I was feeling left out. It seemed like EVERYBODY I know is watching this show. I was wondering what I was missing. So, while I’m waiting for Season 4 of White Collar to come on Netflix I decided to start Downton. (Does anybody else ever feel like you break up with characters of a TV show when a season ends? I keep wondering what they are doing and I internet stalk the characters to see if I can find anything out about them. It is a problem. I digress.)

Anyway, I was 2 episodes in and I didn’t get it. What is the thrill? What is this cult following of this show? I posted something on facebook and most people said to give it through season one and I’ll be hooked. They were right! It was really funny – one of my facebook friends said, “the thing about Downton Abbey is it is basically a soap opera with a bigger vocabulary and fancier clothes.” I think she is exactly right! I think, though, that the clothes is one of the things I really like about the show – you just don’t see that every day!

I now need to find where I can watch season 2. It isn’t on Netflix and I don’t have hulu plus….although I hear a rumor you can do a month free trial, so I might have to try that.
So here’s my question – why do YOU like the show? The drama? The class system? (I find the class system FASCINATING.) The clothes? I’d love to hear! (And convince Jen to start watching it once she gets over jet lag from being in Europe!)
I just started watching it too! I got tired of hearing everyone talk about it. My husband wasn’t it interested in it so that’s why I had been putting it off. I now watch it in the morning after he leaves for work and before Noah wakes up. I’m just jumping in on season 3 but love it! I’m not sure what my favorite part is. Maybe that it’s set in England… in a castle. I’m a sucker for things like that. Anyway I’m glad to hear you liked it too.
We love Downton. I agree that after the first episode I was like um…what? But then it gets soooo much better. After the Turkish guy was dead in Mary’s bed they had me.
I also love the costumes, and just that it is so different from anything else on TV these days!
You know, I have wondered about the appeal too. What IS it about that show? It’s pretty slow-paced and kinda boring, but strangely addicting. I do love the uniforms and all that fascinating class hierarchy stuff.
If you have Amazon Prime you can watch Season 2 on there. Otherwise maybe you can check it out from the library?
I confess, it took me all of 5 minutes to love it. The Titanic sank. Their lives were changed. I was hooked.
Also, how awesome is it to watch a show where it isn’t stopped every 5 minutes for 2 minutes worth of commercials? It’s so much easier to get sucked in.

I love everything about Downton. The clothes, the castle, the love stories. I’m a sucker. Amazon Prime has season 2!
