our first freebie

WE GOT A FREEBIE!!!!!!!!!!!!  WOOOHOOO!!  Ok, let me calm down…remember the other day when we felt like we were an infomercial?  And then we mentioned that we don’t get any compensation for blogging about the stuff we like?  Well, last week we got a little surprise.  Remember the infinity scarf that we featured from  TomieHarlene?  Well, the lovely owner Sue sent Katie and me our very own scarf!!!  We couldn’t be more thrilled.  She was kind enough to send us each one so we have a brighter pink (naturally I took that one) and a softer pink (for my lovely sister).  Doesn’t it look beautiful (or maybe I should say doesn’t the scarf…I look a bit scary…)?

We love love love our new scarves!  Since we usually don’t purchase the things we blog about (we’d be broke if we purchased everything!) it was such a great surprise to see that something that we love online actually is fantastic in real life!  Thank you so much Sue!!  And don’t forget, it’s still October (but not for long!) to go purchase your own infinity scarf or any of the other amazing stores and products who support breast cancer research/awareness during the month of October.

BCA cat toys?

Like Katie mentioned this morning, sometimes it is nice to have something that supports a great cause, like breast cancer research, but doesn’t scream “breast cancer!!” all over it.  Katie found most of the breast cancer products we are featuring (yay Katie) but when she came across the etsy store Cindimh I don’t know if she realized just how cool it actually is.  Accoring to her etsy site, she designs and sews whimsical creatures called “Wee Ones” and even smaller creatures dubbed “Liten Venns” (which means Small Friends in Norwegian ~ her heritage). Also in the mix you will find Plush Pillows, Retro/Contemporary Pillow Covers (and pillow inserts) and knit beanies.  And now, because of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she has BC Buddies and BC Beanies Knit hats in which 10% of the sale of each BC Buddy and BC Knit Hat will go to Susan G Komen for the Cure! WOOHOO!  Check out one of her hats:

Tell me that doesn’t look like the coziest little thing that you would love to throw on your kids head as you walk out into the tundra otherwise known as winter….which is basically here.  This hat is only $9 for a baby size, $16 for a toddler size and $20 for an adult size.  And besides the fact that is pink you would never know a percent of the proceeds went towards breast cancer awareness.  And bonus, it’s machine washable.  I don’t understand why people buy stuff that aren’t machine washable.  On the World Race we had to wash our clothes by hand almost every month and let me tell you it was NOT fun and made me really appreciate washers.  Wow I get off topic easy.

But wait, there’s more!  Cindimh has something she likes to call BC Buddies.  This is the part that I don’t think Katie realized was in this store.  Her buddies are like cheaper (but just as cute) versions of Ugly Dolls.  Well I think so anyway.  Like this guy.  For $18.

Isn’t he cute???  But his proceeds don’t go toward the Susan B Komen Foundation.  You could still buy him though.  Christmas is coming (and we are SO excited for Christmas!!!).  But these guys on the other hand do go toward the Susan B Komen Foundation.

SO CUTE.  These 2 have the pink ribbon but lots of the other ones don’t if you didn’t want it.  :)   And since I know we have lots of cat lovers out there I just have to share this one.

{all images used with permission from Cindimh}

This one is like a double whammy.  Not only does 10% of this sale will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure but $1.00 from each sale goes to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill animal “shelter” in Kanab, Utah.  This cute little cat toy is stuffed with non-allergenic polyfill and laced with home-grown Colorado organic catnip.  So your cat will have a new friend.  Or enemy.  Or something.  And it’s only $8.  Done and done.  (She also has a dog toy for all you dog lovers out there.)  So, with that being said, there is something for everyone at Cindimh.  You should probably go check it out.

On a side note, there are days when we write blog posts and we feel like we are being an infomericial for a certain product or store.  For the record, unless noted otherwise, we are not compensated in any way for our blog posts.  We genuinely love the things we blog about.  And we are pretty sure you’ll love them, too.

use your hands to make a signature

Filed Under: Breast Cancer Awareness Products, making a difference by Katie — Leave a comment
October 19, 2011

So we’re coming to the end of October which means we’re coming to the end of Breast Cancer Awareness month!  Here are a couple more ways you can support the cause of raising awareness of breast cancer and helping to find a cure!

First, I came across this fun thing Sharpie is doing on its website:

{image from Sharpie’s website}

As the image obviously says, Sharpie will donate up to $10,000 to the City of Hope’s breast cancer research, education, and education programs.  A number of celebrities have donated their signatures, including several of OUR favorites: Colbie Caillat, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Phelps!  Lauren Conrad has also donated her signature, and we already know we like the same pillows as her.  ;-)

The only DOWNSIDE to this Sharpie signature donation is that it is a little bit labor intensive.  You have to sign in with either a Sharpie username or your facebook/twitter account, and then upload your pink signature.  I got all the way to the uploading part and then I quit.  I’m going to try again later, I just didn’t have it in me at the time I was trying this to go through the whole uploading process.  So I went to bed.

The other company we wanted you to be aware of that is helping to raise breast cancer awareness is Aveda.  Who DOESN’T love the way an Aveda salon smells when you walk into it?  Aveda is selling limited editions of its Pink Ribbon Hand Relief lotion where $4 per purchase of this cream goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

{image from Aveda’s website}

Aveda will donate up to $270,000 through the end of this month, so if you were thinking about getting new hand cream it might be worth buying this!

Do you know of any other places that are doing unique things to raise awareness/funds for breast cancer?  We’ve had fun looking things up, although it wasn’t as easy to find products as we were hoping!  I remember a couple years ago some vacuum cleaner company (Dyson, I think?) was selling a pink vacuum.  My comment was, “that’s cool!” My mom’s comment was, “I really don’t want to be reminded that I had breast cancer every single time I need to vacuum.”  Makes sense.  Ever since then I’ve been a bit turned off by the huge blatantly pink things – and while I appreciate what companies are doing, its nice to buy a bottle of lotion or a pink sharpie that you can throw away when you are done with it!

pink lips and planning

Filed Under: accessories, Breast Cancer Awareness Products, for the girl, making a difference by Jen — 1 Comment
October 18, 2011

Did any of our lovely readers go to a Caribou Coffee this weekend and see all of the crazy pink accessories all over?  My friend works at a Caribou so I will stop there frequently on my way to work and when I stopped in on Friday he was wearing a hot pink afro!  His co-worker was wearing a hot pink cowboy hat and they had hot pink boas, streamers, and table cloths all over their store.  What a great way to raise breast cancer awareness!  Thank you, Caribou, for being so fantastic at raising awareness and money for breast cancer research.

To stay with our breast cancer awareness theme (if you’re new to PPS check out this post or our Breast Cancer Awareness category under Making A Difference above), Katie found a cosmetics company that is raising money for breast cancer research.  The company is Motives by Loren Ridinger.  I had actually never heard of this company before Katie showed it to me (which is sort of funny that Katie found it since I am usually the make-up wearing sister, not her…).  Check out their mission from earlier.org…

{image taken from here}

We love that they are working to detect cancer earlier because our mom’s cancer was detected even before she could feel anything which was a God send.  She went in to her doctor when she found a lump (which turned out to be nothing) but while she was in there, they found the cancerous lump.   We would love it if all cancer was detected before it got past Stage 1…we would love it even more if cancer was non-existent but until then, earlier detection would be amazing.  According to their site, Motives® will donate $1 for every Inspired Collagen Core & Brilliant Mineral lipstick purchased during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Oct 5—Oct 31).

{images taken from here}

The Motives® Minerals Lipstick is $15.75 and the Motives® Collagen Core Lipstick is $22.50.  There are numerous more shades than the ones shown above.  I’m fairly certain you can only buy this makeup online but if you know differently let us know.  :)   I wore lipstick similar to the shade on the right at my friend Athena’s wedding but it was one of the other bridesmaids.  I have been dying to get some for myself so this might be the perfect time to do so!

This weekend Katie and I had a PPS planning session.  We like having planning sessions because it usually involves a coffee shop, some delicious coffee and getting loads of work done.  Something we think is so funny is that we have never fought about our blog or disliked what the other person wrote in a post.  We’ll occasionally add stuff to one another’s posts but have never disliked what was originally said.  I guess that makes us good blogging partners then.

Can I just say how blessed I am to have a sister like Katie?  I am so thankful for our close relationship.  I love how she encourages me in my walk with God, builds me up as the individual that I am, lets me cry when I need to (and usually brings me chocolate or ice cream) and is always there for me not matter what.  I wish every girl had a sister like Katie.

Back to the blog…we added a few things to our site (if you weren’t aware):

  • We added a Making A Difference category at the top with our Making A Difference (M.A.D.) Series and Breast Cancer Awareness posts below.  This should make it easier for you to find the posts that we think are extra important (not that we don’t think amazing leather clutches or cute scarves aren’t important but you get my drift…).
  • We organized our blog roll a little bit.  If you have a blog you think we’d like and want to be added to our blog roll let us know!  We love to be introduced to new blogs (and hopefully new friends as well).
  • We added some new sponsors which we’ll be highlighting in the very near future.  If you or anyone you know would want to put an ad on PPS just let us know that as well!  :)
  • Is there anything on our site that you’d like to see changed?  Or is there something on our site that you just love?

It’s Tuesday so that means Katie needs to have her room done by tomorrow and we have wedding stuff starting in just 3 days!!  How exciting!!

a card and a car

Filed Under: Breast Cancer Awareness Products, for the soul by Jen — 5 Comments
October 12, 2011

It’s been awhile since Katie and I have talked about cards.  If you remember from these posts here and here we love getting cards in the mail.  I think the last card I got was one from my mom a while back when I was feeling really stressed about life.  She’s a good mom.  I think I’m going to make a goal to send out 2 cards this week to unsuspecting friends of mine.  You should join me in this goal.  :)   To continue on with our breast cancer awareness month products Katie found these sweet cards.

I love having classy thank you cards to mail to friends and these definitely fit the classy part.  These cards are from the etsy shop Cricket Printing and are only $20 for a set of 10!  Not too shabby if you ask me.  They also have a Hope cards that would be great to give a cancer survivor or someone going through treatment right now.

According to Cricket Printing website, a portion of the proceeds of each set of note cards will be donated to the Avon Foundation, to support breast cancer research, and help in the fight against breast cancer. This message is printed on the back of each note card along with the Avon Foundation’s website, and Cricket Printing’s logo and website.

{image used with permission from Cricket Printing}

On a sort of opposite but still on sort of the same wave length, a reader of ours shared another car dealership that is helping out with breast cancer research.  FIAT (really cute Italian cars) has a Pink Ribbon edition car that gives $1000 from each purchase of the car to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  In FIAT’s words, “the FIAT 500 Pink Ribbon Limited-Edition provides breast cancer awareness advocates an opportunity to literally drive consciousness forward, in style”.  So cool!  You should probably go buy one of these cars then take a picture of yourself in it and we’ll blog about you.  Then we’ll come over for a ride.  (Full disclaimer, our reader just happens to be a FIAT mechanic – the only one in Minnesota at that – but he his not getting paid for sharing this information with us.)

{image taken from here}

On another side but sort of the same topic, my car’s power steering hose is leaking.  And it’s not a cheap fix.  Sigh.  If anyone wants to buy me a new car (preferably the FIAT above) that would be great.  :)    To end on a happy note, we have ANOTHER giveaway tomorrow!!!  WOOHOO!!  We are so excited for this one especially since Katie and I have some of the products.  Hope y’all get excited!

A scarf to help, a scarf to swap

Filed Under: accessories, Breast Cancer Awareness Products, for the girl by Jen — 1 Comment
October 10, 2011

I have a scarf fetish.  When I used to work at Maurices they used to call me the “scarf girl” because I would literally wear scarves every day.  I love them!  They’re like my security blanket.  I love to wear big cozy scarves in the winter to keep me warm and lighter-weight ones in the summer.  I probably have 20ish.  When Katie found this scarf I knew it would be the perfect addition to my scarf collection.

{image used with permission from TomieHarlene}

This scarf comes from TomieHarlene another lovely etsy store!  Like Katie mentioned lat week and this morning, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite products that are giving money for cancer research.  According to Sue, the owner’s, site this is a Scarf with a Cause.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for any hot pink or pink azalea infinity scarf purchased.  And with this scarf being only $16 it will be a very affordable way to help good cause!  Are there any products that you like to purchase to benefit breast cancer treatment or the Susan G. Komen Foundation?  We love all of the scarves that Sue from TomieHarlene has in her store.  They are all the infinity style which I love and are all extremely affordable.  She even has some denim ones which is a fun twist (no pun intended haha).

Related to scarves, Krysten over at Why Girls Are Weird is doing a scarf swap!  Not just any scarf swap but a Keep Warm, Look Snazzy Scarf Swap!!

Below is all of the info that you need for the swap taken from Krysten’s site.
All About The Swap in Krysten’s words:
Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year – the crisp weather, the gorgeous colors, the amazing food and of course the fun things that you get to wear.  I know you all are nodding your heads right now.  The Keep Warm, Look Snazzy Scarf Swap is all about the lovely things that go along with Autumn.  The only thing that must be included in the swap is, of course, a beautiful scarf.  Otherwise, you have free reign to include as little or as much as you’d like in your swap package.
Pair Ups
You may request to either have a partner within the U.S. or outside of the U.S.  This is so that all international bloggers can take part as well!  Keep in mind if you are within the U.S. and request to have an international partner you’ll be paying extra shipping which is not to be included in the price of your swap items.
Dates
Sign ups will remain open until October 12th, 2011.  Your swap partner will be emailed to you on October 13th, 2011.  Please make sure to have your package sent out by October 27th, 2011.  Starting on November 4th, 2011, I’d love to have anyone who signed up for the swap posting about the packages they received!  Krysten be having a fun link up party on her site so you’ll be able to check up other swap partners and what they got!

be a warrior

Filed Under: accessories, Breast Cancer Awareness Products, for the girl by Katie — 3 Comments
October 10, 2011

As we mentioned before, Jen and I have been personally impacted by breast cancer.  And as I’m sure you know, October is breast cancer awareness month!  I will admit, I forget about it every year until I see the NFL players sporting pink everything.  I think it is great seeing all the different places that are supporting breast cancer awareness and research.  Just the other day I was at Old Navy and they asked if I wanted to give $1 to the Susan G Komen foundation (ummm….I think that’s where it was….it was something breast cancer related!) so I said “yes, of course!”

Jen and I were wanting to let you all know of some places that are helping to fight breast cancer.  One of the places that has really done a LOT for breast cancer is Ford.  I am writing this post on Sunday night and according to their website they have donated $2,029,569 so far to breast cancer research!  We wanted to take a minutes to make sure you know what they are selling in their store and some fun things that we BOTH like that you can buy to support the cause!

One of the things that I never knew about Fords Warrior Gear was the symbolism involved in all of their apparel and other gear.  Here is the info from Ford’s Warriors In Pink website: Pretty cool, huh?  Makes those scarf adds that you see in magazines mean a little bit more! Jen and I have two favorite t-shirts from the Warrior Gear.  This first t-shirt is called the Warrior Power T-Shirt.  Here’s the cool thing: This t-shirt is $20. 100% of the net proceeds to go the Susan G Komen for the Cure – that is $11.56.  SOOOOooo it works to this: You are paying $8.44 for a t-shirt, making a $11.56 donation to Susan G Komen, you are getting a soft, cute t-shirt AND you are raising awareness for breast cancer when you wear it!  WIN WIN WIN!!

{image found here}

Ok, our other favorite t-shirt is this Midnight Warrior T-Shirt.  The proceeds of this shirt is $11.73:

{image found here}

Ford has a TON of different stuff for sale on their website.  Take a few minutes to check it out!  We have enjoyed checking out their site as they have things that aren’t just your standard pink ribbon.  :-)   Thanks, Ford, for helping to find a cure for breast cancer!

PS – We figured out how to change the color for your name when you comment!!  Now you can actually SEE it! :-)

in october we wear pink and make goals

Filed Under: Breast Cancer Awareness Products, for the girl by Katie — 2 Comments
October 4, 2011

Ok everyone, its OCTOBER, believe it or not!  We’ve been at this blog thing for a little over 2 months and we are having a FANTASTIC time.  Some things we’ve learned about ourselves so far:

1. Pinterest is addicting.
2. We LOVE featuring Etsy stores.
3. There really is such a thing as Blogland and we love finding it!
4. Sometimes we wonder if we will run out of things to blog about.
5. Some weeks we have a MILLION ideas and some weeks we are scrambling to find things that we both like.
6. Coffee and chocolate makes everything better. (we kind of knew that already)

We’ve seen some of our blog friends put goals on their blogs and we loved the idea so we decided to copy them.  We figured we throw out a variety of goals and see what we can do this month!  Keep in mind, our brother is getting married in less than THREE weeks so this will be a bit of a challenging month.  We think we can do it, though!  Here’s what we’ve got so far:

1.  Have Sherry or John from Young House Love reply to a comment we leave them. This happened on Friday!!!
2.  Have 100+ followers on facebook.
3.  Have a week where 80 unique people read our blog each day.
4.  Try 4 new recipes.
5.  Read our devotional Jesus Calling every day for the entire month.
6.  Have 5 people send us things they think we’d both like.
7.  Finish Jen’s dining room.
8.  Finish Katie’s daughters’ bedroom.
9.  Katie to lose 2 more pounds to be at her pre-pregnancy weight.
10. Jen to stay on top of her training for her full marathon.
11. Feature at least two readers.
12. Use our blog to raise awareness of places that are helping to find a cure for breast cancer as October is breast cancer awareness month.

We’ll revisit these goals in the beginning of November and see how we did!

*****************************************************************************************************************************

Now.
Back to things we love.  One of the things we love most is our mom.  A little over five years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  For a long time the word “cancer” was at the forefront of most of our thoughts as mom navigated her way through doctor appointments, treatments, and learning more about this disease than anyone wants to.  Thankfully mom is FIVE YEARS CANCER FREE(!) and we don’t have to think about cancer on a daily basis anymore (at least, Jen and I don’t).  We do know, however, that there are plenty of women and family members out there who ARE having to think about breast cancer more than they ever wanted to right now.  Because of this we wanted to be a part of breast cancer awareness month and remind people that breast cancer still exists and how important early detection is.  Let’s find a cure!

You may remember when we featured these awesome prints done by Yellow Heart Art.  We follow Yellow Heart Art on facebook and she recently revealed this brand new print:

{image used with permission from Yellow Heart Art}

You can find out the story behind this print here on Yellow Heart Art’s blog, but we do want to note on PPS that 30% of the proceeds from this limited edition print will go to the Susan G Komen foundation! Mila Rose Designs is also partnering with the Susan G Komen foundation – you can find out all the details of her October “Buy a Band, Save a Boob” specials on Yellow Heart Art’s blog as well!  Here is a peek of Mila Rose Designs’ work (definitely more Jen’s style!):

{image used with permission from Mila Rose Designs}

Thanks Yellow Heart Art and Mila Rose Designs for helping to find a cure for breast cancer!
