fall festivals and decorating

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Jen — 4 Comments
September 24, 2012

Happy Monday!  It seems like the weekend went WAY too fast.  They always do, but this one seemed especially fast.  Like Katie mentioned on Friday, we all went to a fall festival on Saturday.  We picked raspberries, fed goats, Matea rode a pony, we shot an apple cannon and picked some pumpkins.  It was a great day!

It was a little cold and super windy so we busted out the mittens and hats.  I was stoked.

Katie went IN a pumpkin patch for the very first time so SHE was stoked.

We bundled up the little kids in the stroller.  Would you guess these two are a year apart??  Fun fact – Adlee is only 5 inches taller than Elias.

So clearly from these pictures you can tell it is officially fall in Minnesota.  And for that we are thankful.  It’s been a brutal summer.  90s and humidity do not agree with us.

Katie and I  both bought some pumpkins and gourds to begin our fall decorating.  Neither one of us really decorates for fall but maybe this year that will change.  Probably not, but one can always dream, right?  Here are some of our inspiration pieces for the year.  We’ll let you know if any of them actually make it into our house.  Right now our fall decorating consists of a pumpkin and 3 gourds in a cluster on our dining room tables.  Whoop.

We love the idea of painting pumpkins.  I think doing a state could be really difficult but you could probably stencil on numbers easy enough.  I think Katie should do this one for sure.

Source: countryliving.com via Katie on Pinterest

We also both love decorating with leaves.  One year Katie framed a bunch of leaves to decorate for fall.  I loved it.  Maybe she should do that again and blog about it.

Source: centsationalgirl.com via Katie on Pinterest

We also both really love using branches to decorate.  Cheap, simple and easy.  One year I made leaves out of paper and glued them onto branches.  It was one of my most favorite decorations ever.

Source: midwestliving.com via Katie on Pinterest

This would be fun to do for a dinner party or possibly Thanksgiving?  The cluster of pumpkins and candles are fun.

So what about you?  Are you a fall decorater? Or do you just skip over fall decorating and go straight to CHRISTMAS like us? :)

diy compliment bunting

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Jen — 2 Comments
August 6, 2012

Katie and I like to encourage one another.  One reason we like to blog is because we like to make people smile, show our readers fun things we find around the web and remind everyone how much they are loved.  The other day Katie pinned this and I just loved it.

Source: howaboutorange.blogspot.com via Katie on Pinterest

You see bunting all over the place…for bridal showers, baby showers, weddings and birthdays.  But how often do you see bunting just to make people feel happy and tell them how awesome they are?  Never.  Until now.  :)

I sort of think that this is like my little birthday present to myself (by the way, have we mentioned that it is my BIRTHDAY MONTH?!?).  If you didn’t know, I love my birthday.  A lot.  A lot a lot.  If I had it my way the birthday fairy would come by tonight and put these in my room so I would wake up to them and feel awesome about myself.

Anyways, the awesome Jessica from How About Orange gives you the FREE printables for this bunting.  You heard me right, free printables for this.  You could print this out and put it in your coworkers cube to brighten her day tomorrow.  Or in your child’s room for when they wake up.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to see this at some point during their day?  Nobody.  So head on over to How About Orange, print off your own bunting and make someone’s day today….even if it is your own.

Happy Monday everyone!

a fun diy globe project

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Jen — 8 Comments
July 25, 2012

I did it!!  I completed both of the tasks on my weekend to do list!  I’m so proud of myself.  :)   And surprisingly, neither one of them was really all that difficult!  I’ll show you the globe before and after but first, I have something way more fun to show you.

Remember back in this post where we made a skirt out of a dress?  And then I had this awesome looking Selena-style bra thing?

Well, this weekend my friend Laura and I were out shopping and stopped into Urban Outfitters.  I was shocked when I saw this on one of their mannequins.

Dude, I’m going to have to have my mom make that bra thing into a legitimate shirt (would you call that a shirt???) and we can sell it make tons of money.  Or something.

Moving on.  Remember on Friday when I said I wanted to do this to a globe?

Source: flickr.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

Well I did it.  Here is my super awesome $1 globe that I found at a garage sale.

I got out all of my paints and brushes which I realized are all from probably 3rd grade and are TERRIBLE.  I decided that it could look really cool if I used the same yellow from my headboard instead of a white like in my inspiration piece.

So I whipped out my can of paint, dipped my 3rd grade paintbrush in it and got to writing.  I probably should have planned out what I was going to do ahead of time but my attempt to write one word was taking WAY too long so I just jumped right in.

Parts of it look half cool and half like a 3rd grader.

Parts of it look completely like a 3rd grader.

But overall I think I’m fairly pleased with it.  There is at least one side that I like.  :)   I decided to put on most of the fruits of the spirit (some are shortened: happiness = happy) as well as a few others.

I’m thinking I’ll keep it like this for a bit until I get inspired to paint all over it and do something different.

So what do you think??  3rd grade material or a little older?

bathroom update! big changes!

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Katie — 11 Comments
June 26, 2012

I am finally getting around to posting another bathroom update!  This one will show MAJOR changes, so I’ll just get right too it. I didn’t edit these photos at all, I just threw them onto this post.  I’m such a good blogger.  (Here are the before and during posts) Here is a photo from the doorway “before…”

and “after…”

Another shot of the vanity.  Ikea plumbing kits are VERY hard to install to normal plumbing.  Aaron made quite a few trips to the hardware store over a few days to get it right.  In the end, the extra sink and vanity storage that we got form an Ikea unit made it worth it, but it was not without some MAJOR headaches and frustration.  (Standard double sinks would have been too long and would have butted right up to the toilet in the bathroom.  The Ikea sinks gave us a double sink that also left us room for the extra storage unit.)

Oh look!  We have a shower.

And here is a picture to show the new lighting.

Isn’t it NIGHT and DAY?!  I LOVE IT!!  We still have all the finishing touches to do.  The list includes:
1. Hang mirror
2. Install trim
3. Hooks for towels
4. ARTWORK (I’m thinking a few bright frames with some simple art)
5. Different window treatment (no clue there)
6. Different rugs (I’m thinking something bright??)

So that is the latest!  I am excited to work on the finishing touches.  I have been on the lookout for frames at garage sales but have struck out so far.  I might have to pay upscale Goodwill prices for some frames to spray paint.  :-)   Stay tuned for an “official” before/after post when things are a bit more complete!

bathroom remodel part 2

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Katie — 9 Comments
June 5, 2012

Lets continue with part 2 of our bathroom remodel saga, shall we?

Ok.

Where we left off, we were in the process of removing the tile from the shower.  That took FOREVER.  Like 3 hours.  My shoulders were killing me – but it was such a sense of accomplishment when it was done!  Then, Aaron took the sink and vanity out of the little vanity nook. And then the fun part came – ripping out that dumb wall!  The wall had nothing in it, no electrical or plumbing or anything.  Aaron told Matea to grab some gloves and a hammer and he let her pound a hole in the wall.  (she is in her pajamas.)  Funny thing about her gloves – we have these white dress up gloves that I think most girls would use to play princess, but Matea thinks they are “work gloves.”  She always uses them to “play farm” and “feed the pigs.”  Anyhow.

Out comes the wall!

We found out, after the wall came out, that the wall behind the vanity is 3/4″ deeper than the wall behind the toilet.  So, Aaron had to tear out the existing drywall, get spacers, and install new drywall.  Very annoying for him.  Anyhow, the picture below is with the wall out a portion of the floor gone.  HEY-OH!

For the last almost two weeks we’ve been trying to keep Adlee out of things like drywall screws.

Over Memorial Day our friends Dave and Fae came – Dave helped Aaron out for two days and it was AWESOME.  They were able to get so much done!  In the photo below they had installed new drywall, mudded every part that needed to get mudded (is that a word?), put in new subfloor, and were all ready to paint.  We had a gallon of white paint and 3/4 a gallon of gray so we just used a paint stick to tint the white.  It was very scientific.  :-)   If you walked into the room you’d think it was white.

So I’ll end at this point.  Imagine….walls done…now we need to install stuff!!  Yeah!!!  Only it takes WAY LONGER than you think it should, even when you think it is going to take WAY LONG!  Ugh.  So we just listened to harmonica music to make it not as painful.

Stay tuned….we’re making progress.  Who would have thought it would be so hard to find the right size mirror?!?!

goodbye ugly

Filed Under: diy, for the home by Katie — 5 Comments
May 31, 2012

I can’t believe it is THURSDAY already!  Holy cow, where is this week going.  I just wanted to say thank you to you all for your kind and encouraging words on my post on Tuesday.  It really means a lot to me.

I think I mentioned somewhere on this blog that one of the things we wanted to do was remodel our bathroom.  We’ve been slowly accumulating “stuff” to tackle the big project.  The original plan was to get started on the bathroom over Memorial Day weekend….but then we thought we were getting a baby…but then we didn’t get a baby…so naturally we’d get home from Texas super late Thursday night, get the girls the next day, and by Friday evening have our bathroom torn up.

:-)

I’m not entirely sure what we were thinking, but it is going to be SO AWESOME when this is done.

I will now show you the ugliness.  In all fairness, the bathroom is a FINE bathroom.  It is just cosmetically ugly and has basically no usable storage.  So, here it is.  The house was built in 1988, and from what I hear, these weird half wall thingees are common in many of those houses(?).

On the other side of that weird wall is a couple feet of empty space (we stuck this random shelving unit we had in there…I CLEARLY did not style it or use it to its fullest potential AT ALL – although – normally it holds extra toilet paper).  And then the toilet is over by the window. Such an odd set up and waste of space.

The flooring was actually nice…but we weren’t really into beige.  And the flooring didn’t go under that half wall or under the (glued in) vanity. The shower tile was pretty ugly – I’m sure in its day it was awesome.  There is a built in towel rack in the shower that we obviously used to hang washcloths.

Bathrooms are so hard to take pictures of.  The one t hing I DIDN’T photograph is the ceiling – that wall that separates the vanity from the toilet area actually went across the ceiling as well – so it LITERALLY was like you were walking through another doorway to get into the shower/toilet part of the bathroom.  Does that make sense?  I hope so.  If it doesn’t I’ll draw you a picture.  :-)

So Friday night things were looking like this:

Aaron has been working SO HARD all weekend, and even as I write this he is in the bathroom working.  We were beyond blessed by some dear friends who gave up a couple days to come hang out and give Aaron a hand over the weekend.  I’ll be posting more updates soon!

Jen’s Friday Free For All: Dressers!

Filed Under: diy, for the home, furniture by Jen — 8 Comments
May 25, 2012

Happy long weekend everyone!!  I can’t wait for lots of fun in the sun this weekend.  And fun in Katie’s garage working on my NEW DRESSER that I finally found!!!  It’s actually my boss’ dresser that she is getting rid of.

The big question is WHAT COLOR DO I PAINT IT???

Gray?

Source: designsponge.com via Robbie on Pinterest

White?

Source: desiretoinspire.net via Design Lotus on Pinterest

This color?

Source: pbteen.com via Mlve on Pinterest

Printed?

Source: houzz.com via Tami on Pinterest

I really like these two colors together:

Remember, my headboard looks like this:

Source: paisleyprintshoes.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

I no longer have that bedspread on my bed.  I currently have a printed quilt that is white with “the tree of life” which is brown, yellow, blue, green…basically every color.  I also bought a really dark gray duvet cover at a garage sale.  People, I need your HELP!    You can check out more pins with bright yellow in it on my bedroom board.  Any and all opinions would be awesome.

I’m also buying her couch as well and (hopefully) selling mine today.  It’s kind of sad to be parting with the floral print couch (seriously…I’m quite fond of it) but my new couch is a solid off white color so I’ll be able to incorporate other fun colors into the mix.

Moving on…this weekend I’m also going to get lots of runs in this weekend…hopefully work on my sweet runner’s tan of sports bra back and a killer shorts line.  I’ve been thinking about getting one of those bracelets with my name and an emergency contact but I think these could be even better:

Source: tottoos.org via Diane on Pinterest

except instead of “lost” I would put “passed out”, “hurt”, “dehydrated” or “dead”.  Maybe I should get ones that say “If you are hot, single, between 27-35 and you love Jesus please call…”.  Now that sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it?  Although I’d have to put Katie’s number so she can screen them for me.

To leave you laughing on this lovely Friday, here is a joke that Matea says all the time.

Source: Uploaded by user via Jenna on Pinterest

Confession.  I didn’t get it for about 5 minutes until Aaron explained it to me.  Oops.

DIY headboard part 2 – reveal!

Filed Under: diy, for the home, furniture by Jen — 40 Comments
April 17, 2012

In case you missed Part 1 of the DIY headboard check it out here.

We left off where the fun actually started.  After lunch Aaron and I headed out to the hardware store to pick up some paint and other items in which I have no idea why they were necessary (you know, like hinges, bolts, washers, wing nuts and 2×4′s).

As you recall, I initially wanted a headboard like this:

Source: designsponge.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

But when Aaron explained his idea of the doors I had images of bright chevron patterns flying in my head.  One dresser that I had pinned awhile back (and blogged about here) initially came to mind.  I could make this headboard look like that dresser.

{image via design sponge}

We ended up going to 2 different stores because the first one didn’t carry the shade of yellow spray paint I was looking for in matte.  Of course, neither did the 2nd one so we ended up getting a quart of regular paint in the exact shade I wanted…fuzzy navel.  Doesn’t that name sound delicious (?!).

While at the store Aaron proceeded to have conversations with me about things such as 2 or 3 hinges.  It went something like this:

Aaron:  So Jen, what do you think…should we get 2 or 3 hinges?

Jen:  Ummm (in my head I’m thinking, “I don’t even understand why we are getting hinges…can’t we just hot glue the 2 door parts together?”)

Aaron: This project is going to end up amazing and we want it to last through multiple moves (he knows me very well) so I think 3 hinges is the way to go in order for it to last the longest.

Jen:  Ummm….I agree.  (still clueless as to why we’re talking about hinges…)

Aaron: On the other hand, the dimensions of the doors and the force it will cause on 2 hinges won’t be enough for it to come apart especially if we’re careful with it.

Jen:  Yes.  (while thinking “You’re building this thing in the first place I’m pretty sure you could fix it if it broke.  And I still don’t get the hinge aspect.”)

Aaron:  Alright, good call, 2 hinges it is.  We’ll be just fine with 2.

This is how most of our conversations went throughout the evening.  Aaron would be talking dimensions, getting rulers out, doing calculations while Katie and I stood around clueless as to what he was talking about.  We decided by the end of it that had it been just Katie and me working on this project we would have barely gotten the 2 doors home (after buying the wrong ones), cutting one of them up and then quitting because it looked horrendous.  We’re thankful Aaron was around to lead the way on this DIY project.

We don’t really have any good before pictures of the doors (I know, we’re bad bloggers) and this isn’t even the door we bought but it is the same style.  Work with us.

Alright, when we got home we cut the doors.  I was actually inside on the internet looking up exactly how to paint a chevron pattern (which is way harder than it sounds AND nobody really has a good way of doing it…including us as you’ll soon see).  Basically Aaron just cut the bottom part of the door in order to keep the top panel and enough to connect legs to it.  I’m sure it was very difficult and he looked very manly doing it.

After this step, you tape off your chevron pattern in order to paint.  We had found a blog that said to make a grid and tape according to the grid.  (For that project they did one inch by one inch sections and made a small chevron pattern.)  We wanted a larger pattern so a. it had more pop and b. it didn’t take us 24 hours to tape down one section.

We initially made a grid 2 inches by 2 inches.  When it was all laid out we realized we had like 1/4 of an inch at the top and that would look stupid so we cleaned that grid off and started over.  This time Aaron took the dimensions and divided by 6 since we wanted about 6 lines of each color (or so we thought…).  We drew it all out and got to taping.

As you can see by our tape measure and mark we measured out 3 1/8 inches.  Very precise.

The first row worked like a charm.  Basically.

The second row sucked.  Our grid no longer worked and we had no clue what we were doing.  If we kept with the grid our yellow rows would be teeny tiny or if we skipped a line it would be huge.  We had to improvise.

We decided if we went about 2.5 inches and a little more (we know, very precise) than it would be perfect.  So we just marked the peak and valley of each row on our original grid to keep them in line and increased by 2.5 and a little more.  (Is this even making sense??)

When we finally  got it all taped out, we measured the distance of each peaks height and width to make a better grid for the second one.  This one included just the spots where the peaks would hit (in hind sight we should have done both the peaks and valley but we realized that after the first one had been painted so it was too hard to measure).

Before painting it we cleaned off all of our grid  lines since our yellow wouldn’t necessarily cover that up.  (Ok, I just lied.  We actually started painting, realized we wouldn’t be able to paint over them and proceeded to rub off the paint in order to “erase” the lines.  It actually worked.  We continued painting.)

Katie made some coffee, we finished one coat, drank some coffee, ate some of Katie’s leftover birthday dessert, stared at the paint drying, painted a second coat, drank some more coffee, stared at the wet paint, drank some more coffee, attempted to take some tape off before realizing it wasn’t dry yet, drank some more coffee and finally found the doors dry and ready to be finished.  (During this step we also painted the 2 2x4s that are used for the legs.  And drank coffee.  Did we mention that already?)

We also got paint on my new TOMs.  Tear.

We took of the tape to reveal our chevron pattern.  It was pretty much amazing except for the fact that wherever we had taken the tape off the door and put it back on the seal hadn’t been 100% tight so a bit of paint had soaked through.

I was really nervous for this step.

If you do this yourself, tear off a new piece of tape if you remove one.  You may think we’re being crazy and wasteful but trust us, your crisp clean lines will show up way better if you use a fresh piece of tape for each line.

Look at the concentration…

It is by no means bad but the first door especially has a few areas where you can totally see where the paint soaked through.  Luckily, Katie’s and my motto is “Good Enough” so we moved on with the next step.

Source: 2.bp.blogspot.com via Katie on Pinterest

The next step is where the hinges come to play.  We flipped the door over, lined them up and Aaron screwed in the hinges.  Of course I matched up the tops to be “perfectly in line” and of course they weren’t so out came the saw so Aaron could perfect it.  We like having him around.

When they were all perfect he showed me the reason behind the hinges.  It was like the heavens shown down on the doors and the angels sang.  It folds perfectly in half for easy moving.  Seriously genius.  This is why we did an arranged marriage for Katie so Aaron could be his genius self with our DIY projects.  Perfect.

At this point there was really nothing else for us to do so we called it a night.  11:30pm was a bit late for us anyhow so I headed home and Katie and Aaron headed to bed.

The next day Katie and Aaron came over to finish.  First we cleaned off the grid lines after allowing the paint to completely dry.  Next, Aaron measured exactly where the headboard should hit above the mattress.  He cut the legs screwed them into the doors.  He actually did this twice with a shorter board that could be attached directly underneath the door and attach to the first leg for better stability. (the pictures below only show the full length legs – we missed taking pictures of the shorter legs and actually attaching it to the headboard, but we think you get the general idea, right?!)

We then brought the headboard into my bedroom and aligned my bed frame to the legs.  He drilled 2 holes on either side to attached bolts from the bed frame to the headboard.  He screwed the bolts in, attached the washers and nuts and we were finished!

Like I mentioned yesterday the entire project only cost me $30.55.

{all images taken by Katie or Jen unless otherwise noted}

And I am SO happy with the results!!  My very first headboard as an adult!

So what do you think??  Would you ever make your own headboard?  Have you attempted a chevron pattern before?

DIY headboard part 1

Filed Under: diy, for the home, furniture by Jen — 7 Comments
April 16, 2012

Friday was Katie’s birthday.  Obviously.  We had a glorious evening of food from Bucca de Bepo, Katie’s birthday dessert, and lots of laughter.  I decided as I was walking out the door to work that I would spend the night at Katie’s house on Friday and we could go get our bikes tuned up Saturday morning.  We have a big bike trip coming up and my butt bones need to get prepared for it.

(For the record my butt bones are SO not ready to sit on a bike seat for longer that 1 mile.  We did about 4 on Saturday and then I rode my bike 2.5 miles each way to the grocery store on Sunday and I was basically in tears when I rode over every bump.  Ouch.  Any suggestions??  I have bike shorts and am getting a new seat ASAP.)

Anyways…after the bike store we decided to hit up the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  I have been dying to make a headboard and Aaron (Katie’s husband) had gladly offered his carpentry skills.  I had pinned (and emailed Aaron) a bunch of inspiration headboards – most made out of old barn wood.  (For the record, I’ve started organizing my DIY pinterest board so the only things on there are things I’m actually going to DIY…can I get a what what??)

Source: designsponge.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

Source: seriouslyahomemaker.com via Jennifer Flavin on Pinterest

The problem was finding the wood.  You could buy it some off of Craigslist for about $60 which seemed sort of pricey for old wood.  We decided to check the ReStore to see if they had anything we could use.  We arrived with high hopes which were quickly dashed as we walked through the store.  No old barn wood.  Sigh.

We debated between shutters, cabinet doors and toilet bowl seats.  I was ready to throw in the towel and pay the $60 for barn wood but Katie and Aaron had other ideas.  They headed over to the door section and started spurting out ideas.  Ideas of cutting up a few doors, painting them (or not painting them) and putting them together (somehow) were thrown out.

{image taken by Jen}

We started pulling out door after door looking for 2 that went together, weren’t totally demolished and could look sweet as a headboard.  We finally settled on 2 – 2 panel doors.  We had the thought that we could put the 2 top panels of each door together and paint a chevron pattern inside them.

Lucky for us, the doors at the ReStore were ON SALE…$5 instead of the $10 it usually is so both doors only costs me $10.71 (with tax). I think that’s a bit better than the $60 I was going to pay…

We (and by we I mean Aaron) got them on our hillbilly car with our bikes while Katie and I took pictures of Aaron working and our matching TOMs shoes (for the record, never wear new TOMs or any shoes for that matter while painting…you never know when you might spill…).

{images taken by Jen}

We made it home with both doors, both bikes, 2 hungry children and 3 excited adults.  Tomorrow we’ll show you exactly what we (again, by we I mean Aaron) did and the final product.  And for the record, the entire process from start to finish cost me exactly $30.55.  And that includes about 3/4 of a quart of paint leftover for lots of future projects.

Anyone else be crafty this weekend?  Anyone else getting more organized on pinterest in hopes of actually doing the DIY project you pin?

a new way to light a closet

Filed Under: diy, for the girl, for the home by Jen — 13 Comments
February 16, 2012

I don’t know how it works but the apartments I typically rent have great closets but bit so great kitchens. Maybe it is great apartment hunting skills or maybe it’s just God making sure I have enough space for my clothes and just enough space to cook. (One of my friends described my kitchen as one word…Efficient…yep, it’s small.)

I’ll show you it someday.

Back to my closet. I have one bigger closet with one long bar and 2 shelves (hence the step stool I needed I mentioned here). It’s nothing close to the organized amazingness of my old closet but it is perfect for all of my shirts. (yes I have another closet for pants, shirts and dresses…that is why I need yesterday’s “how to honestly clean your closet“).

On the other hand, it’s not anything like this closet:

{image via}

My closet is perfect except for one thing. No lights. How’s a girl supposed to pick out an outfit that is going to make her look fabulous for that day when she just happens to run into her future husband? She can’t. Or she can but she’ll probably look a little mismatched.

Since I’m renting, I’m not about to get an electrition and get a sweet light put into my closet.  Tempting, but not going happen.  Although I really wanted to get one of these lights from Design Within Reach.  The left one is only $4,500 and the antler is $3,000.  Totally within reach.

{images via}

I also didn’t want to get the push lights because those never really do much good.

I planned on getting some sort of lamp I could somehow hang from the ceiling but then I had a thought.  In my old place I had strings of outdoor bulb lights around my vanity to light up my room.  My old room didn’t have any lights so I had to use a few lamps to light it up.  I used the bulb lights to light up my mirror so I was able to apply my makeup decently…don’t ask me why I didn’t just use the bathroom…I’m a creature of habit.

So I got some little hooks and nailed them up on the shelves.  Then I simply strung the lights around the top with the plug going through the top of the door and plugging in right inside my bedroom.

I must say, it lights up the closet perfectly.  And the best part is I didn’t spend any money (besides the $1 on hooks)!

Waste not, want not, right?  And don’t mind the fact that one of the bulbs are out…they still look fantastic.  :)

So have you had any genius money saving ideas recently?
